Dragons wrap singles season at D-10 tournament

ERIE, Pa. – Warren’s girls tennis team had a solid showing at the District 10 Singles Tournament Saturday at the Westwood Racket Club.

The Dragons sent three players to the Round of 16, before all three bowed out to one of the top players in the district.

“All of the girls played well today,” Warren coach John Parroccini said.

Megan McGuinness, Maddie Rogers and Sydnie Cochran all made it to the Round of 16.

Cochran pushed Hickory’s No. 2 singles player, Isabella Frangakis, but dropped an 8-4 decision.

McGuinness ran into McDowell’s Abby Murray and was blanked, 8-0, while Rogers met up with Fairview freshman Trinity Fox. Fox got the better of Rogers, 8-1.

Murray topped Fox, 6-1, 6-3, for the D-10 singles title.

Warren’s Kaity McCracken fell to Hickory’s Nicollette Leonard, 8-2.

“Maddie, Megan and Kaity had a very difficult draw,” Parroccini said. “But Sydnie, in her first D-10 tournament, surprised Isabella and showed me that she plans to make a serious run at a starting singles spot for next year.”

While Warren’s singles season has come to a close, the doubles teams, who have been playing their best tennis of late, will get their crack at the district title Thursday at Westwood.
