Warren volleyball spikes Harbor Creek

Heading into Thursday’s rematch with Harbor Creek, Warren volleyball coach Mike Dolan knew his team would have to have a physical presence at the net to come away with a win.

The Dragons got that physicality from Jordan Sitler and Olivia English and avenged a 3-1 loss in the season-opener with a 25-23, 25-18 and 25-20 sweep of the Huskies.

“Jordan was outstanding with her physical play at the net,” Dolan said. “Olivia did a great job in the middle as well. We blocked well and played some good back row defense behind the block, which slowed down their offense and their big hitters.”

Sitler led the Warren (4-5 overall, 3-3 Region 6) attack with 11 kills, on 15 swings (.667 hitting) and a block. English had eight kills, two blocks and an ace. Hannah Shattuck and Grace Wortman each had four kills. Wortman added three digs and a block and Shattuck had a block and an assist.

“Grace and Hannah did a very nice job playing tough at the net on the outside,” Dolan said.

Lex Nyquist had 27 assists, nine digs, three kills, two aces and a block.

“Lex gave all our hitters great chances and spread around the offense really well, as usual,” Dolan said.

Katie Madigan had 17 digs, an assist and a kill, while Halee Mineweaser had nine digs, three kills and an assist and Meredith Morrison had six digs, an ace and an assist.

“Harbor Creek served tough as a team, but our serve and pass game was much improved tonight,” Dolan said. “Katie has really embraced the libero role and is doing a terrific job there. Halee gave us a defensive spark. Meredith served very well again and passed tough. She teamed up with Katie to make a standout defensive play late in game 3.”

Harbor Creek won the junior varsity match 25-21 and 25-21.

Cara Munksgard and Jayna Baldensperger each had a pair of kills. Baldensperger also had three digs and an ace. Ellee Irwin, Carly Beers and Lauren Dolan all registered two digs. Beers added a kill and two blocks and Dolan had six assists and an ace. Isabel Wortman and Morrison both had three digs, with Morrison adding an ace and Wortman a kill and an ace. Gracie Gatto had two aces and a dig.
