Sheffield volleyball sweeps visiting Brockway

Sheffield’s Megan Johnson sets during Thursday’s match against Brockway. Johnson has 12 aces and 12 assists to help lead the Lady Wolverines to a 3-0 victory.

That felt good.

After suffering a heartbreaking loss to Ridgway on Tuesday, the Sheffield volleyball team came back in a big way on Thursday, sweeping visiting Brockway in three sets, 25- 23, 25-18, 25-10.

“Thank God, we got the monkey off of our backs,” said Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay.

And they did so in impressive fashion. After a tight 25-23 win in the first set, they dominated the second and third, building big leads in each.

“We talked about what makes Brockway dangerous,” Lemay said. “We beat them in their tournament, and we told them that they’re going to come after you and they did.”

Sheffield's Lynzie Grubbs sends the ball over the net during Thursday's match against Brockway.

Brockway took a brief lead in the first at 19-18, but a kill from Tori Childress tied it, and after a Rover serve out of bounds made it 24-22, the Wolverines were able to close it out.

The second was all Sheffield, as an ace from Megan Johnson and a kill from Childress made it 7-1. The Lady Wolverines had 20 aces in the match, 12 of which came from Johnson.

“That was a big difference,” Lemay said.

Brockway got within three at 19-16, but a kill from Emily Leichtenberger and an ace from Childress closed out the set.

So, Sheffield found itself up 2-0, just like they did against Ridgway. This time, however, there was no doubt they were going to finish it off.

Kills from Leichtenberger and Annabel Sheldon got them out to a 6-1 advantage. Leading 12-6, they went on a 12-3 run that featured some more dominant serving from Johnson and kills from Childress, Grubbs and Leichtenberger.

All things considered, it was a picture-perfect

way to close out the match.

“Tuesday was heartbreaking,” Lemay said. “We talked about intensity and drive and what you need to do to make that happen. But that’s not something we can teach them, that has to come from within.”

Leading the charge for Sheffield were Johnson (12 assists, 12 aces, 3 kills), Leichtenberger (6 kills), Sheldon (6 digs), Marissa Grubbs (6 digs) and Childress (5 aces).

“I’m just so happy for them,” Lemay said. “I want them to feel good and to take this with them going forward to our tournament on Saturday and then Ridgway again on Tuesday.”

The JV team was also a winner, 2-1 (22-25, 25-16, 15-10).

Leading Sheffield was Lexi Goldthwaite (4 assists), Caidence Anderson (4 kills) and Maddy Roell (4 kills).
