Lindell, Dragons blank Meadville

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Caleb Lindell scored all five Warren goals as the Dragons came away from Meadville with a 5-0 Region 5 win.

While Lindell was scoring goals, the Dragons’ defense kept the Bulldogs offense in check in what was a physical contest. Meadville was issued four yellow cards through the match.

“It was very physical and there were some things going on I didn’t appreciate,” Warren coach Denny Flatt said. “I was very proud of our kids, they kept their composure. It’s very easy for high school kids to lose their emotions.”

Lindell put his first one in the back of the net at 11:39 off an assist from Wesley Kiehl. Ryon Flatt took a corner at 24:25 and sent it to Lindell who put it in for a 2-0 advantage. Four minutes later, Lindell took a direct kick and buried it to give Warren a 3-0 lead at the half.

“We possessed the ball really well,” Denny Flatt said. “We came out with good intensity and controlled the game.”

Lindell was back at it seven minutes into the second half with an unassisted tally. He closed out the scoring at 65:19 off an assist from Zane Anderson.

The Dragons (6-3 overall, 3-2 Region 5) weren’t just an offensive powerhouse. The defense led by Tyler Gustafson, Jack Darling and Sean Duckett kept the Bulldogs (4-5, 2-3) from garnering any quality scoring chances.

“The defense pretty much extinguished their threats pretty quickly,” Denny Flatt said. “I was very happy with the way we played team defense. We’ve been emphasizing that for a couple weeks now.”

For all the good, Coach Flatt still saw room for improvement.

“We had 15 shots on goal and we should have put the game out of reach earlier,” he said. “We need to work on our finishing and converting shots into goals.”

Meadville won the junior varsity match, 3-0.

“That was a senior heavy JV team,” Denny Flatt said. “We were much younger. (Assistant coach) Chris (Darling) and I were very happy with the way they played. They grew up a lot and had to play hard to stay in the game.”

Joe Letko and Ricky Madril had strong games, Flatt added.

Warren heads to undefeated Harbor Creek Saturday.

“We’re going to get up for that game,” Denny Flatt said. “And, hopefully, make sure they’re not undefeated anymore.”

The match is set for a 10 a.m. start.

Starting at $3.50/week.
