Lady Eagles continue strong play with sweep of Iroquois

Kenzie Olewine and the Youngsville Lady Eagles earned a 3-1 win over Tidioute on Thursday.

Youngsville volleyball is starting to get on a roll.

The Lady Eagles beat Iroquois 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-22) on Tuesday, winning for the fourth time in their last five matches.

“I’m really happy, they did phenomenal,” said Youngsville coach Vicky Montecalvo. “We’re really starting to come together.”

The first game was all Youngsville, as they jumped out to a 13-4 lead and never looked back. Andrea Sveda had a pair of kills in the early run. Iroquois made a brief run to get within five, 18-13, but setter Amber Evans had the first of her six kills on the evening to end the spurt and Youngsville was able to close it out from there.

Game two was a complete opposite, as the Braves got out to an 8-1 advantage, prompting an Eagle timeout.

Youngsville’s Amber Evans sets during Game 2 of Tuesday’s match against Iroquois.

The stoppage proved to be perfectly timed, as YHS rallied with a 10-3 surge to even things at 11, capped by an Evans kill. Youngsville (4-3 overall, 2-2 Region 3) took its first lead at 18-17 and never trailed again, as kills from Sveda and Kenzie Olewine helped them to a 2-0 advantage.

“We really hit the ball well tonight,” Montecalvo said. “We were able to keep up the motivation, even when we got down.”

The third game was back-and-forth early, with the Braves taking an 8-6 lead. That was it, however, thanks to a remarkable run by Sveda. The junior served eight-straight points, five of them via ace, to give YHS a 14-8 advantage.

Iroquois called timeout, but to no avail, as kills from Ellie Bojaczko and Mallory Sherrard and an ace from Kamryn Weissinger made it 20-11.

The Braves (1-6, 1-3) came storming back, getting within one at 22-21, but Sveda was able to help them close out the 3-0 triumph at the service line.

“That was beautiful to see,” Montecalvo said. “It’s great for Andrea because she had been our most inconsistent server to date.”

Sveda had 7 kills and 8 aces, while Evans had 6 kills, 18 service points and 3 aces and Bojaczko 4 kills.

The JV squad fell 2-0, 25-21, 25-10.

“They played strong defense in the first,” noted Montecalvo. “In the second game Iroquois got out to a bit lead and we couldn’t quite dig out from it. They’re doing really well though. We have almost all freshmen on JV.”

The Lady Eagles look to continue their strong play on Thursday when they travel to take on Tidioute.

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS 3,

EISENHOWER 0

Cambridge Springs took advantage of a sloppy and inconsistent Eisenhower team to come away with a 25-8, 25-10 and 25-10 sweep.

The Knights committed 46 unforced errors through three sets, nearly four times as many total kills (11) as they had for the match.

“You can’t overcome that,” Eisenhower coach Scott Olson said. “We’ve got to get back to work tomorrow and figure it out.”

The win helped Cambridge Springs (5-2 overall, 4-0 Region 3) keep pace with Union City atop the Region 3 standings.

With a top team coming to the John M. Neese gymnasium, Eisenhower (1-6, 1-4) needed to be on top of its game to keep pace. Instead, the Knights were “tentative on just about every play.”

“We just couldn’t get going,” Olson said. “There was no flow to what we did and no sense of urgency. We’ve got to find that if we’re going to be competitive.”

Madi Green led the Knights attack with four kills. Rayna Hultman had eight assists, seven digs and two aces. Paige Edwards added six digs and Emiley Wheeler had four digs. They each finished with a pair of kills.

Cambridge Springs won the junior varsity match, 25-17 and 25-17.

Logan Grove had three service points and three aces, Phoebe Tower had eight service points, two aces and a kill and Faith Donnel had three service points.

Eisenhower travels to Iroquois Thursday for another Region 3 match.
