Lady Dragons fall to McDowell

Warren’s Megan McGuinness returns a shot during her second singles match against McDowell at Betts Park, Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019. The Trojans topped the Dragons, 5-0.

McDowell came to Betts Park Tuesday and showed why it is one of the perennial powers in District 10 girls tennis.

The Trojans swept the Dragons, 5-0, and lost only four sets along the way.

“I tell my players, ‘If you want to be the best, you have to play the best,'” Warren coach John Parroccini said.

McDowell’s Abby Murray topped Warren captain Maddie Rogers, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles.

“Maddie was playing at less than 100 percent today,” Parroccini said. “Maddie has been struggling lately and was not on her full game today.”

Warren’s Sydney Cochran returns a shot during a third singles match against McDowell at Betts Park Tuesday. Cochran, playing in her first varsity singles match, fell, 6-0, 6-1, as the Trojans came away with a 5-0 win.

Brooke Lowry bested Megan McGuinness, 6-0, 6-1, at second singles.

“Brooke played a smart game today and never let Megan find her game,” Warren assistant coach Kimberleigh Parroccini said.

At third singles, Maria Minichelli defeated Sydnie Cochran, who was playing her first varsity singles match, 6-0, 6-1.

“Sydnie has let the coaches know she wants to work to be a singles player next year and this was the perfect opportunity for her since Kaity McCracken was ill,” John Parroccini said. “She learned a great deal from this match.”

Sara Becker and Nabiah Bhatti defeated Madalynn Perry and Kamryn Moore, 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles.

“The score does not reflect the level of play by Madalyn and Kamryn,” Kimberleigh Parroccini said. “The girls fought for every point, but fell short.”

Natalia Miksa and Abby Iozik topped the new pairing of Sydney Giovaoni and Amanda Gray, 6-0, 6-2, at second doubles.

“This was the first time this pair has played together and they showed the coaches a great deal of promise,” John Parroccini said.

In exhibition doubles action, Isabella Shingler and Katie Moore were defeated by Rosa Simon and Alex Rodi, 6-3. Rylie Yeager and Sophie Olsen fell to Teah Jane and Nora Lane, 6-3. Corinn Gern and Rylee Nuhfer were defeated by Yano Year and Ana Bowman, 6-2. Peyton Morrison and Jackie Cumberland fell to Vanessa Hibes and Alex Roddy, 2-1. The sole Dragon victory came when Jackie Peterson and Sydney Anderson defeated Emily Cennett and Madalyn Mason 3-0. In exhibition singles, Isabella Shingler defeated Ashley Plank 2-0.

The loss moved the Lady Dragons to 1-4 on the season.

Warren will be back home Thursday to host Erie.
