Knights top Greenville in OT; McDowell blanks Warren

Both Bortz and Mallek had goals in the match, but Bortz’s overtime assist to Leah Peterson gave the Knights a 2-1 win over the Trojans.

Eisenhower girls soccer got back on the winning track Monday with a 2-1 overtime win against visiting Greenville.

The Trojans had a 1-0 halftime lead, but Patricia Bortz tied it in regulation and had the assist on Leah Peterson’s game-winner in overtime.

Greenville (2-3) took the lead 13 minutes into the match with a goal from Sarah Mallek. The Trojans fired another six shots on goal through the remainder of the half, but keeper Faith Johnson was up to the task and kept it a 1-0 deficit at the half.

The Knights (5-2-2) changed their offensive approach in the second half. Eisenhower opted for a short, quick passing game to control possession.

The change worked as the Knights were able to create more offensive opportunities. With just over 15 minutes to play, Bortz converted one of those opportunities.

Eisenhower got a corner and Caroline Smelko sent the kick right to Bortz. Bortz followed the ball into the net to knot the match at 1-1.

Regulation ended with the teams tied at 1-1.

The Knights ended it early when Bortz sent a cross to Peterson. She tapped the pass into the right corner to end the match.

Eisenhower hits the road Wednesday for a critical Region 3 match at Iroquois. The Knights are 2-0-1 in the region, while the Braves are 2-1-0.

“Tonight’s match has moments we can learn from and use going forward,” Bickling said.
