Eisenhower looks for first road win at Cambridge Springs

Thirty-three seconds.

In just 33 seconds, Northwestern turned a one-possession game into a three-touchdown deficit and delivered a 31-10 loss to Eisenhower on homecoming last week.

The Knights hung with the bigger Wildcats through 3 1/2 quarters, but a late touchdown drive and immediate turnover allowed Northwestern to put the game away.

Tonight, the Knights have their sights set on a much different opponent when they travel to Cambridge Springs for a Region 2 matchup.

The Blue Devils (2-3 overall, 1-1 Region 2) opened the season with a thrilling 28-26 win over Girard. They followed that with a 20-6 win at Saegertown. Things spiraled quickly from there.

In the last three weeks, Cambridge Springs has been outscored 160-7. The Blue Devils last score came against Keystone in a 56-7 loss in Week 3. They’ve been shutout in back-to-back weeks at Maplewood (41-0) and against Farrell (63-0).

Cambridge Springs has been fairly balanced offensively. The Blue Devils have run the ball 99 times on the year, and attempted 84 passes. The passing game has had nearly double the effectiveness, however. The Blue Devils have gained 454 yards through the air and just 272 yards on the ground. For reference, 39 individual runners in District 10 have more rushing yards on the year than the entire Cambridge Springs offense.

Running back Jared Taylor and quarterback Trenton Wheeler have split carries almost evenly to this point in the year. Taylor has 39 runs for 134 yards (3.4 ypc) and two scores, while Wheeler has 33 carries for 97 yards (2.9 ypc) and a pair of touchdowns.

Through the air, Wheeler is 34-81 for 454 yards with three touchdowns and six interceptions. Taylor has been his go-to target, hauling in 12 passes for 173 yards. Landon Byrne and Jaden Grubbs each have six receptions on the year. Byrne has 105 yards (17.5 ypc) and a score and Grubbs has 67 yards (11.1 ypc).

Eisenhower quarterback Owen Trumbull continued his breakout season last week with a 176 passing yards, a touchdown and an interception. On the season, the junior signal-caller is 61-95 (64 percent) for 736 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s currently seventh in all of D-10 in passing yards, sixth in completions and ninth in touchdowns.

Trumbull’s favorite target this season has been Dillon Benson. So far this season, Benson has collected 24 receptions for 420 yards (17.5 ypc) and five touchdowns. That puts him fourth in D-10 in receptions and yards, and tied for second in touchdowns. Zane Alexander is second on the team with 20 receptions. He has 138 yards and a score on the year.

While the passing game has been flying, the running game has struggled at times this season. The Knights were held under 100 rushing yards as a team for the third time last week. Alexander leads the way with 64 carries for 225 yards (3.5 ypc) and three scores. Cael Black has run 50 times for 211 yards (4.2 ypc), while Trumbull has taken off 23 times for 105 yards (4.6 ypc) and a score and Benson has carried it 14 times for 59 yards.

Kickoff at Baird Memorial Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
