Steelies win again

OBERLIN, Ohio – Another day, another solid pitching performance from a Warren pitcher for the Erie Steelheads 17U Prospects.

Friday was Nick Hussey’s turn to keep the Steelies in the game until the offense came alive. They did just that in the fifth inning, when they turned a 1-run game into a 6-run game en route to an 11-3 win over Solon Stampede 17U at Oberlin College in the Brownlee Showcase Tournament.

The Stampede took a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Steelies came right back to tie it in the third.

Micah Passmore and Aidan Kelly drew consecutvie walks to start the inning. With one away, Ryan Rafalski singled in Passmore to make it 1-1. Luke Jackson doubled and Mason Bender singled in the fourth to give the Steelheads a 2-1 lead.

The offense erupted for five runs in the fifth. Kelly was hit by a pitch with one away and, one out later, Rafalski singled him home. Casey Smith reached on an error and Matt Shepard walked to load the bases. Cody Smith was hit by a pitch to bring in Rafalski. Jackson followed with a bases-clearing double to make it 7-1.

Mitch Grosch was hit by a pitch to start the sixth and Passmore and Kelly walked to load the bases. Cameron Williamson brought them all in with a triple to right. Rafalski pushed the lead to 11-1 with a sacrifice fly to right.

An error and passed ball put a pair of runners in scoring position in the seventh for the Stampede, and a single brought both in to close out the scoring.

Hussey was solid through five innings. He gave up three runs, one earned, on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Casey Smith pitched a scoreless inning of relief and struck out one.

A day after throwing a complete game 3-hitter, Rafalski went 2-2 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI. Jackson was 2-3 with a run and RBI and Williamson went 1-3 with a run and RBI. Grosch scored a run and Passmore walked twice and scored twice.

The Steelies take on the Spikes 17U King today at 5:30 p.m.
