Sheffield falls to Johnsonburg

Sheffield’s Marissa Grubbs delives a pitch against Johnsonburg on Monday.

Emily Leichtenberger, Marissa Grubbs and Ashley Frederick all had monster days at the plate for Sheffield, but it wasn’t enough in an 18-4, 6-inning loss to Johnsonburg on Monday.

Johnsonburg, one of top teams in District 9, scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings and six more in the sixth to secure the win.

Leichtenberger belted four hits and scored a pair of runs, as Sheffield tied the game in the bottom of the first on a hard-hit single to center.

Frederick came up again with Leichtenberger and Grubbs on base and belted an RBI double, which was followed by a squeeze play off the bat of Alyssa Schmader that brought in Leichtenberger.

The top of Johnsonburg’s lineup was equally as potent. No. 3 hitter Lindsey Kocjancic belted three doubles and had five RBIs, while leadoff hitter Amanda Williams had three RBIs, as did Alyssa Kasmierski.

Sheffield catcher Tori Childress attempts to field a low throw as Johnsonburg’s Peyton Delhunty slides into home during Monday’s game at Sheffield High School.

Seven Johnsonburg players had multiple hits.

The 2-3-4 hitters for Sheffield went a combined 9-for-10 with three RBI and all four runs scored.

Sheffield returns to action today, hosting Elk County Catholic.
