Kane rallies past Sheffield

Sheffield’s Ashley Frederick connects on an RBI double during the first inning of the Lady Wolverines’ game against Kane on Wednesday on Wolverine Mountain.

Sheffield softball came oh so close to picking up a win on Senior Day, but visiting Kane scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning en route to a 9-7 win on Wednesday on Wolverine Mountain.

The Lady Wolverines led 7-3 going in the seventh, but an error, two consecutive hits, a walk and a wild pitch tied the game with two outs. That turned the lineup around and set the stage for Emma Ely, who ripped a 2-run single to give Kane a 9-7 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Jerika Dexter, Mareena Bailey and Alyssa Dunham all walked with two outs, but Kane pitcher Rachel Danielson was able to get a strikeout to end the game.

It was a disappointing end to what was a very promising start for Sheffield, which took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back doubles from Emily Leichtenberger and Ashley Frederick.

An error allowed Kane to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, 2-2, only to watch as Sheffield re-took the lead on Alyssa Dunham’s RBI single in the fourth.

Sheffield’s Marissa Grubbs slides into first as Kane’s Haley Slater applies a tag.

The Lady Wolves tied the game in the fifth on Haley Slater’s RBI single.

Sheffield answered in a big way in the bottom half of the inning.

Tori Childress walked and came around to score on a wild pitch, Marissa Grubbs connected on her third straight single and Leichtenberger walked. Frederick followed and came through with an RBI groundout, with an error bringing in Leichtenberger to give Sheffield a 6-3 lead.

They tacked on an additional run in the sixth on Anna McCracken’s RBI single.

Grubbs was the tough luck loser on the mound, but she pitched extremely well. Of the seven runs she allowed, only one was earned. She also struck out four.

Sheffield returns to action for its season finale today, hosting county rival Eisenhower.
