Dragons topple Corry in Region 7 finale

COLUMBUS, Pa. – Ryan Arnold had four hits and Micah Passmore and Austyn Cummings both homered as the Warren Dragons bounced back from a pair of tough losses last week with a 12-5 win in their Region 7 finale against Corry on Wednesday.

With the win, Warren locked up second place in Region 7, which is very important. Because Oil City, the No. 3 team from Region 6, opted out of the District 10 playoffs, the Dragons (12-6 overall, 5-3 Region 7) will have a bye all the way into the 4A semifinals. Brackets are scheduled to be released on Thursday.

In earning a season sweep of the Beavers (9-8, 3-5), Warren struck early and often, beginning in the first inning, as Cummings went deep off a Brendan Zajac pitch to make it 2-0 after Passmore reached on an error. It was Cummings’ third homer of the season.

It was Passmore’s turn in the third inning, as he took Zajac deep to right-center to make it 3-1, the first homer of his varsity career for the sophomore.

From there, the Dragons scored three runs each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

Passmore, Cummings and Arnold were just part of the potent attack, as eight of the nine starters had at least one hit.

Ben Berdine was 2-for-3 with double and three RBI, Lance Baldensperger doubled, scored three runs and had three hits, while James Swanson and Mitch Grosch drove in two runs each.

On the mound Ryan Rafalski was efficient, striking out three and walking three. Perhaps the only blemish for the Dragons were the three errors they committed, making all of Rafalski’s runs allowed unearned.

Warren is scheduled to play at Meadville on today in its regular season finale, which will give them eight days between that game and the District 10 semifinals.
