Youngsville girls, Sheffield boys earn wins

TIONESTA, Pa. – Youngsville’s girls and Sheffield’s boys track and field teams picked wins in a tri-meet at North Clarion Thursday.

The Lady Eagles topped the Wolverines, 82-41, but were narrowly edged by the Wolves, 77-73. The Wolverines beat the Eagles, 79-62. The Wolves topped the Eagles, 83-66. Results for the Lady Wolverines and Lady Wolves were not available at press time.

“The girls got their first win of the year,” Youngsville coach John Victor said. “The pole vault (in which Youngsville doesn’t compete) cost the girls a win against North Clarion. The boys lost two close ones. I’m proud of everybody.”

Naomi Swartzbaugh set a personal best in the 300 hurdles with a 48.5, good for first in both meets. She also swept the 110 hurdles and 100. Joclyn Taydus (200), Maddi Hildum (high jump) and Julia Bojaczko (800) were also dual winners for the Lady Eagles.

“Maddi Hildum is starting to step up,” Victor said. “Every meet she is getting better.”

Emily Leichtenberger was a triple winner in the meet against Youngsville. She took first in the shot put, discus and javelin. Sheffield also got a win from Kyra Wotorson in the triple jump.

Jake Hogg and Mik Fehlman each won three events against both Sheffield and North Clarion. Hogg took first in the triple jump, high jump and javelin, while Fehlman ran his way to first in the 800, 1600 and 3200.

“Hogg is consistently jumping 6-3, which is the state qualifying mark this year,” Victor said. “Mik Fehlman keeps running strong.”

Sheffield’s boys swept the relays against Youngsville, and got a pair of wins from each of Delentay Walker (100, 200), Caden Smead (400, long jump) and Matt Dunham (shot put, discus).

Both Sheffield and Youngsville have a lengthy layoff. The Eagles next compete in the McDowell Invitational April 27, while the Wolverines are off until April 30 when they host NoPo and Oswayo Valley.

“We’ve got a long week of no meets,” Victor said. “We’re going to start prepping for the rest of the season. We’re going to have good practices and work on technique.”
