Warren’s Loutzenhiser wins D-10, Region 6 Player of the Year; freshmen phenoms also all-region

Warren’s Margo Lotuzenhiser celebrates with teammate Taylor Childress (1) following a 50-37 win over Villa on Feb. 4. In that game, Loutzenhiser became the program’s all-time leading scorer. Loutzenhiser earned D-10 and Region 6 Player of the Year honors, which were released on Sunday

Postseason awards are the by-product of offseason work.

That is certainly the case for the Warren Lady Dragons, District 10 Class 5A champions and one of the best seasons in program history at 22-4.

Senior guard Margo Loutzenhiser, who earlier in the season became the program’s all-time leading scorer, was named Region 6 Player of the Year, as well as District 10 Player of the Year, while freshmen standouts Riley Childress and Emma Ruhlman were both selected as second-team all-stars in Region 6.

For Loutzenhiser, who will continue her playing career at Gannon, it was the culmination of a terrific four years in a Warren uniform that included bookend District 10 titles.

The numbers speak for themselves – 20.7 points per game, 7.2 rebounds per game, 4 assists per game and 3 steals per game, all while shooting 51 percent from the field. She finishes her career with 1,620 points, third-most in Warren County history.

Not only that, she, along with fellow seniors Alanna Hultberg and Sierra Matson, helped guide a team to success few outside the program thought possible at the start of the season.

She broke the program scoring record, as usual, in epic fashion, spearheading a program-defining 50-37 win over Villa, marking the first time in four years the Victors had lost to a District 10 foe.

Her freshman running mates were terrific in their own rights, stepping in and immediately becoming two of the best players in a region loaded with talent.

Childress was handed the keys to the car so to speak as the starting point guard. All she did was average 10 ppg., 3 rpg., 2.5 apg. and four steals per game while shooting 48 percent from the floor. Much more than her offense however, it was her defense that defined her. No where was this more evident than the District 10 title game against Slippery Rock, where she held 6-0 senior Emma McDermott, a Mercyhurst recruit and Region 5 Player of the Year, scoreless. It was remarkable to watch from District 10’s best defender.

Her freshmen running mate Ruhlman was equally impressive defensively. A natural guard, Ruhlman had to play inside and most times against the opponent’s tallest player. She did so willingly, including completely shutting down Harbor Creek’s second-team all-region pick, Latisha Baker, among others. Offensively, she scored 10.7 ppg. , pulled down 7.5 rpg. and averaged two assists and two steals per contest while shooting 45 percent from the floor.

Eisenhower’s Giannini earns second-team Region 2

The Lady Knights’ lone senior was a great leader for her young team and was also a double-double machine on her way to earning second-team All-Region 2 honors.

In a season that included a perfect record against county foes Youngsville, Sheffield and Tidioute, Giannini averaged 14.3 ppg along with a whopping 15.0 rebounds per contest, one of the top marks in the state, per MaxPreps. She also averaged 3.2 steals per game and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting 40 percent from the field.

She led the Lady Knights to the District 10 playoffs, an experience that will be immensely valuable to the rest of the team moving forward.
