Warren grinds out win over Cranberry

SENECA – Warren began a busy week with a 2-1 non-region win at Cranberry.

The Dragons were without two starters, but battled for seven innings to win its second straight after a season-opening loss to McDowell.

Ellie Lobdell scattered six hits, and worked out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam en route to the complete-game win. She struck out nine.

With the bases loaded in the third, Lobdell sandwiched strikeouts around a charging Lex Nyquist at short, who picked up a slow roller and fired to home for the force.

Kiersten Hoffman had a nice game in her first game catching on the season, and had the go-ahead RBI in the fifth, finishing 2-for-4 with a double.

Warren scored first in the third when Morgan Munksgard opened with a base hit to right and Katie Madigan’s bunt hit put two on. After Nyquist worked a walk, Julia Lobdell’s deep sac fly put the Dragons up 1-0.

Cranberry chipped away and tied the score in the fourth but Warren finally broke through after leaving runners in scoring position in multiple innings.

Nyquist walked in the fifth and with two-outs, stole second. Hoffman drove her in with a line drive to left.

Ellie Lobdell also doubled for Warren, and Nyquist, Munksgard, Gracie Wood, and Alex Neureiter also reached base twice.

Madigan made a nice running catch in left, and Neureiter and Nyquist were solid defensively.

“Cranberry is a nice program, and they have played us tough in recent years,” said Warren coach Jon Sitler.

“This is a nice win and something to build off. We also found things to keep working on and building on.

“Ellie and Kiersten formed a nice battery, and I commend Kiersten for stepping up at catcher. We are a few timely hits from breaking out.”

Warren visits Slippery Rock on Wednesday.
