Loutzenhiser earns all-state honors
Warren’s Margo Loutzenhiser (21) skys for a layup during the first half of a game against Fort LeBoeuf at Warren Area High School, Monday, Jan. 28, 2019. Loutzenhiser finished with a game-high 27 points, putting her just 42 away from the school record, and the Dragons picked up a 66-47 win over the Bison.
Warren’s Margo Loutzenhiser added another accolade to her stellar high school career Friday.
The Lady Dragons’ all-time leading scorer was named a 2018-2019 Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State Class 5A second-team honoree. It’s the second straight all-state nod for Loutzenhiser, who was a third-team selection last year.
“I’m just excited and happy,” Loutzenhiser said. “It shows that hard work pays off.”
In what many outsiders thought would be a rebuilding year for the Lady Dragons. Loutzenhiser led a young squad (just four total upperclassmen) to a 19-3 regular season record (22-4 overall) that included wins over Panama Central (N.Y.) and Villa Maria as well as an 11-game win streak to start the season. The Dragons followed that by rolling through the District 10 playoffs on their way to a second D-10 title. Warren won its playoff games by an average of 19 points, including a 15-point win over Slippery Rock in the championship game.
“This year was all about D-10,” Loutzenhiser said. “(All-state) is great, but I feel like winning D-10 and getting to states was the bow on top (of my high school career). This is like an extra cherry on top of the bow.”
Through all this, Loutzenhiser led the Dragons in scoring at 20.7 ppg and assists at 4 per game. She was second in rebounding with 7.2 per game, shot 51 percent from the field and 87 percent from the free throw line.
While she led the team in many statistical categories, it was her personal leadership on and off the court that may have been Loutzenhiser’s biggest contribution to Warren’s success this season.
“She loved this team,” Warren coach Lisa LaVan said. “Over the summer, we were not a good basketball team. A lot of (the underclassmen) haven’t played with Margo, but they’ve watched her over the years and see what it takes.”
Loutzenhiser saw, almost immediately, that the 2018-2019 Lady Dragons could be special.
“I worked pretty hard with the underclassmen,” she said. “Emma (Ruhlman) and Riley (Childress) earned my respect right away. They’re gamers.”
Still, in Warren’s biggest regular season win, over Villa, the biggest moment belonged to Loutzenhiser. With the Dragons leading the Victors 40-35 in the fourth quarter, Loutzenhiser went to the line for a 1-and-1. She drained both free throws and in doing so became the Lady Dragons’ all-time leading scorer. The points also started a 10-0 run that propelled Warren to a 50-37 win and marked Villa’s first loss to a D-10 opponent in more than four years.
The all-state selection caps Loutzenhiser’s remarkable high school career. She leaves the Lady Dragons as the program’s all-time leading scorer (1,620 points), a two-time District 10 champion, a three-time first-team Region 6 all-star, Region 6 and District 10 Player of the Year and two-time all-state honoree.
“I think this is probably going to be the last thing that comes up, and it’s like the closing of a very good book,” LaVan said. “We’ve talked a lot about the chapters in her book, and this is a perfect way to end it for me.”
Though her high school career is over, she will continue playing collegiately at Gannon. New Gannon women’s coach Cleve Wright has to be excited about his incoming freshmen as Harbor Creek’s Ali Benim was also a Class 5A second-team selection. Rivals on the court during the high school season, Loutzenhiser and Benim are great friends off the court and have been AAU teammates. They’ll now share the court at the Hammermill Center for the next four years.
“Playing with Ali is a lot better than playing against her,” Loutzenhiser said. “We’re super excited for the new coach. Everyone wants to turn the program around.”
A number of other District 10 standouts made all-state as well. Villa’s Addy Cross was second-team in 4A, while West Middlesex standout Makennah White was first-team and Iroquois’ Angelina Meola second-team in 2A. Kennedy Catholic’s Malia Magestro was first-team in 1A.
“Our region was stacked,” LaVan said. “I don’t think there was a better region in D-10 this season.”
“The competition is pretty good here,” Loutzenhiser added. “A lot of us getting picked (for all-state) says something. I think we have some pretty good kids and this shows it.”
