Eisenhower wrestlers dominate Region 3 team

Eisenhower's Alex Barnett

A truly historic season for the Eisenhower Knights wrestling team was rewarded with some postseason honors when District 10 announced its All-Region teams.

Seniors Joey Bauer and Alex Barnett, junior Logan Jaquay and freshman Cael Black earned first-team All-Region 3 honors, while senior Garrett Head garnered second-team honors.

For the Warren Dragons, senior Avery Smith earned first-team in Region 5, as did sophomore Joey Arnold. Junior Ryan Madigan was a second-team selection.

In addition, Jaquay (first-team) and Smith (second-team) also were named to the All-District 10 teams.

For Eisenhower, the trio of Bauer, Jaquay and Black all advanced to the PIAA championships, marking the first time in program history that three wrestlers advanced to states.

For the senior Bauer, the trip to states was the culmination of a great career. Wrestling at 220 pounds, he won a Section I championship and finished second at both the D-10 championships and Northwest Regional. Those second place finishes were both to Grenville’s Jacob McMaster, who went undefeated en route to a state title. Bauer won his first round match at states and finished the season with a record of 31-8.

For Jaquay, the accolades continue to roll in. The junior, wrestling at 113 pounds, beat General McLane’s Andrew Brest in both the D-10 and Northwest Regional finals, this coming after Brest bested him at Section I. He picked up his 100th win in his first round matchup at states and was painfully close to advancing to the PIAA semifinals, dropping an overtime decision. He finished the season at 35-5 and will go into his senior campaign will his sights set on the county wins record.

Black reached phenom status as a freshman. After a fifth-place finish at the D-10 championships at 195 pounds, he stunned the field at the Northwest Regional on his way to a gold medal in a weight class dominated by juniors and seniors. He entered states as one of just a handful of freshmen in the upper weight classes who made their way to Hershey, setting the Eisenhower freshmen wins record in the process, going 34-10.

Barnett might have joined his teammates at states if not for a nasty flu bug that hit him during the postseason. He earned a runner-up finish at Section I at 160 and then finished in the top eight at districts to advance to regionals, where his great career came to a close. He finished his senior season with a record of 25-14.

Head earned a fourth place finish at Section I to advance to the D-10 championships at 145, where his great career came to a close. He finished the season with a record of 26-13.

For the Dragons, Smith brought home their lone District 10 individual championships at 120 pounds, beating Cathedral Prep’s Jamale Crockett 3-1 in the finals. He finished his season at the Norhwest Regional championships with a record of 23-11.

Arnold, meanwhile, had a runner-up finish at D-10, and then made a terrific run at the Northwest Regional, winning his first two matches to advance to the semifinals. And while he came up just short of a trip to states, the sophomore finished with a record of 17-16 and a bright future is ahead.

Madigan also had a runner-up finish at D-10’s at 126 pounds, and saw his season come to a close at the Northwest Regional. He finished his junior season with a record of 20-7.
