Dragons fall in opener to defending D-9 champs
ST MARYS, Pa. – Warren’s boys tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at defending District 9 champ Elk County Catholic Wednesday.
The Crusaders swept the singles matches while the team of Eli Korb and Thomas Lucks picked up the Dragons’ lone win at second doubles.
“We knew going in it was going to be a tough match because they won the District 9 team title (last year),” Warren coach Travis Myler said.
At first singles, one half of the defending D-9 doubles champions and 2018 singles runner-up Isaac Wortman defeated Caleb Ei 7-6 (3), 5-7, 10-8.
“This is a match that neutrals would love to see because both boys played extremely well,” Myler said.
“It’s unfortunate that Caleb didn’t come out on top. I know he is already looking forward to his rematch.”
Nick Daghir topped Tyler Thrift, 6-2, 6-4 in second singles. Third singles went 6-4, 6-4, to Ken Barron over AJ Seyler and Sam Gregory defeated Elliott Neal 6-2, 6-0 in fourth singles.
In first doubles the team of Wortman and Daghir won 8-4 over Ei and Seyler. Korb and Lucks were 9-7 winners over Barron and Gregory in second doubles. Nolin Fannin and Alex Briedel won 9-8 (3) over Wes Kiehl and Seth Connarro at third doubles.
“Our expectations for this team are extremely high and any loss is difficult to take, especially in a match like this,” Warren associate coach Thomas Pellegrino said.
James Lawson and Aidan Colosimo won exhibition matches for the Dragons.
Warren is back in action Friday at Erie.
