Warren’s Caleb Ei and his teammates captured the Region 2 championship with a win at Oil City on Monday.

OIL CITY , Pa. – The Warren Dragons boys tennis team completed a perfect run through Region 2, claiming the outright title with a 4-1 victory at Oil City on Monday.

“With the win, we won the 2019 region championship and will participate in the district team tournament,” noted head coach Travis Myler.

Added assistant coach Thomas Pellegrino: “Very proud of our team and this accomplishment.”

Caleb Ei, the Dragons’ (9-3) No. 1 singles player, made quick work of Alec Klapec in a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win.

“Caleb played his best match of the year today,” Myler said.

Warren’s Tyler Howard fell in a hard-fought match against Caleb Gardner at No. 2 singles.

“Tyler won the match against Gardner at home via the same score as his loss today,” Myler said. “I’m certain that he is hoping he has a chance to play him again this year.”

Seth Connaro won via forfeit at third singles.

“Its difficult to see so many programs with a lot of tennis history struggling to field a full team of seven players.,” Myler added. “This is the third match this year where an opponent has forfeited a match.”

The Dragons’ doubles were once again impressive.

Thomas Lucks and Eli Korb won their match 6-1, 7-6 (5), while Wesley Kiehl and Stephen Ashbaugh were 6-2, 6-0 victors.

“Solid effort overall by our doubles teams,” coach Pellegrino said. “Warren’s strength, historically, has been our depth and our doubles and this year is no different.”

Warren has one more dual match this season, today against Elk County Catholic.

After that, there’s the Tri-County Tournament in Sharon on Wednesday, followed by District 10 singles at the Westwood Racket Club in Erie on Saturday.
