Warren seniors Beyer, Ashbaugh win D-10 titles

Warren's Andrew Beyer won the D-10 title in the 200 freestyle

GENEVA, Ohio – Warren seniors Andrew Beyer and Stephen Ashbaugh came home with some hardware – and a trip to states.

Beyer captured gold in the 200 freestyle at the District 10 Class 3A swimming championships at the SPIRE Institute, while Ashbaugh also raced to victory in the 100 breaststroke.

“Andrew and Stephen were the guys to beat in those events, and they came through,” said Warren coach Russ Beyer. “As a sophomore, Andrew was the top seed in the IM, and I think the moment was a bit much for him at the time, but it was a learning moment.”

Beyer got hurt on Saturday, in what was a frustrating finish to a terrific districts performance. He should be good to go for states, however.

Those two, along with freshman Max Harrison and fellow senior Hunter Smith, were also part of a record-setting 200 medley relay team.

Warren's Stephen Ashbaugh won the D-10 title in the 100 backstroke.

Harrison swam the freestyle portion of the relay, Smith the breaststroke, Ashbaugh the fly and Beyer the backstroke, clocking in at 143.30.

Meadville won the event in 1:40.04.

“I told the guys I thought 1:42 would win it,” coach Beyer said. “Meadville came out like crazy in the backstroke, got that 2-second lead and never relinquished it.

“We had another chance in the 200 free relay with Andrew, Stephen, Max and Logan Johnson. McDowell was just able to out-touch us by less than a second.”

Harrison earned four medals in his D-10 debut.

“That’s a pretty good feat for a freshman,” Beyer said.

Other notable performances for the boys included Derek Hahn, who had a time drop of over three seconds in the IM, while Connor Fehlman dropped over two seconds.

“They were kind of nervous going in, but they both had good meets,” Beyer said. “I’m happy for both of them.”

Logan Johnson dropped his time in the 50 free, as did Hunter Smith in the fly (where he finished just a tenth of a second past his goal of an even 1-minute) and the breaststroke. Cade Johnson dropped times in the 200 and 500 free and Marcus Bonavita dropped another six seconds in the 500 free.

“I try and reward the seniors to do a relay together,” coach Beyer continued. “Hunter, Marcus and Cade were in that, the 400 free relay, as was freshman Carter Anderson, who has been a very vocal inspiration for the team all year.”

For the girls, Katie Beyer placed third in the 100 free and fourth in the 200.

“Those races were nip and tuck the whole way,” her coach and father said. “She’s pretty excited for next year already.”

Gabby Hahn had her best time in the 50 free, where she placed fourth.

“She had a really good meet,” Beyer said.

Cara Anderson dropped time in the 200 free, and coach Beyer also pointed out the performances of Eva Turner and Grace Pennucci.

“Eva did really well her first year with the high school team, same with Grace Pennucci,” he said. “They stepped up and both had their best times in the 50 free. I’m happy for them.”

Overall, Beyer was happy with the performance of everyone.

“As a team, they cheer each other on,” he said. “From that aspect, you couldn’t be more happy and proud of them. They represent Warren well. Swimmers have that bond, that mutual respect. The sportsmanship is there.”
