D-10 champ Smith, nine other Dragons, try to advance to states

Ten Warren Area High School wrestlers make the trek to Altoona High School Fieldhouse today for the Northwest Region Class 3A tournament, with the ultimate goal of making it to states.
The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to Hershey, with the regional being comprised of wrestlers from districts 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10.
Here’s a brief look at each weight class where a Dragon will be competing.

Avery Smith comes into regional red-hot, fresh off a District 10 title and with a record of 21-9. He will meet Cranberry sophomore Evan Hepler (9-13) and the winner will face either C.J. Boyer (Selinsgrove, 17-6) or Lane Aikey (Bellefonte, 28-8) in the quarterfinals. The No. 2 seed is Riley Bower of Williamsport (31-8) and the top seed is Christian Fisher of Mifflin County (29-7).

Ryan Madigan (20-5) nearly advanced to states last year, and he draws Derek Burk of Mifflin County (19-15) in the first round, with the winner to face top seed Trenton Donahue (DuBois, 29-4) in the quarterfinals. On the bottom half of the bracket is Altoona’s Matt Sarbo (32-3).

Warren junior Alex Anderson (15-13) will face Mifflin County’s Ethan Kauffman (22-11) in the first round, with the winner to face either Shawn Matthews (Selinsgrove, 22-9) or Nate Lucas of Allderdice (16-15) in the quarterfinals. The top seed is Shikellamy’s Cade Balestrini (29-2) and Ryan Smith of Bellefonte, at 31-6, is the two seed.

Warren sophomore Donovan Fiscus (12-13) had a strong district tournament and will battle Asror Nasrittinov (4-2) of Brashear in the first round, with the winner to get No. 2 seed and unbeaten Ed Scott (32-0) in the quarterfinals. On the top half of the bracket is another unbeaten, McDowell’s Jeffrey Boyd (24-0).

The Dragons’ Kyle Swick (9-18) earned a third-place finish in D-10 and draws Brock Moore (29-8) of Johnstown in the first round, with the winner to meet No. 2 seed Dalton Woodrow (29-3) of DuBois in the quarterfinals. On the top half of the bracket is D-10 champ Paniro Johnson (32-5) of Cathedral Prep.

Dragon senior John Fankhouser (13-15) draws St. Marys’ Johnny Wittman (19-9) in the first round, with the winner to meet top seed Ethan Richner (32-4) of Bellefonte in the quarterfinals. On the bottom half of the bracket is D-10 champ Marques McClorin (24-14) of Cathedral Prep, as well as Clearfield’s Mark McGonigal (27-7).

Zack Zinger (22-12), Warren’s D-10 runner-up, draws DuBois’ Garrett Starr (22-9) in the first round. The winner will face top seed and D-6 champ Trey Kibe (34-1) of Mifflin County. On the bottom half of the bracket are Williamsport’s Anthony Robinson (24-14) and Juniata’s Tyler Wileman (24-4).

Warren’s Jamo Douvlos (9-5) is certainly a threat here after battling back from an injury, and will draw Shikellamy’s Evan Bingaman (27-8) in the quarterfinals. The winner will face top seed Kyle Myers (16-2) of Bellefone. On the bottom half of the bracket lurks unbeaten Bradford senior Dillon Keane (32-0).

Warren’s Marbrukhe Tagba (14-15) draws Ethan Rossman (31-5) in the first round, with the winner to meet either Tate McLaughlin (State College, 20-11) or Derek Sunafrank (Bradford, 26-8). Also in the top half of the bracket is unbeaten Cathedral Prep senior Carter Starocci (36-0), a Penn State commit. On the bottom half of the bracket is Hollidaysburg’s Mason McCready (27-4), as well as Erie’s Caprice Hall (23-6).

Warren sophomore Joey Arnold (15-15), the D-10 runner-up, gets Altoona’s Joshua Keirn (15-10) in the first round, with the winner to meet either Dade Splain (7-18) of Williamsport or Liam Mares (7-1) of Perry Academy. Unbeaten Cole Urbas (30-0) of State College, a University of Pennsylvania commit, is also in the top half of the bracket, while D-10 champ Kareem Carson (34-8) of Cathedral Prep is on the bottom half of the bracket.
