Stephen Ashbaugh

LEWISBURG, Pa. – A brilliant high school swimming career for Warren senior Stephen Ashbaugh came to a close on Saturday at the PIAA championships at Bucknell University.

The District 10 champion in the 100 breaststroke, Ashbaugh clocked in with a time of 1:02.02 in the 3A prelims, putting him in 32nd place.

In the prelims, Upper St. Clair sophomore Josh Matheny broke the PIAA record with a time of 53.64, besting Brendon Hansen’s (Haverford) previous mark set in 2010.

He did that one better in the finals, finishing with a time of 52.52, which broke the national record set by Indiana’s Chandler Bray in 2016.

Bray currently swims for the University of Florida.

For Ashbaugh, both he and teammate Andrew Beyer wrapped up their senior seasons not only with an appearance at the state championships but plenty of D-10 hardware as well.
