Warren girls fall by 3 at Mercyhurst, capping whirlwind stretch

ERIE, Pa. – The Warren girls completed perhaps the toughest stretch any team in District 10 has faced this season on Saturday against Mercyhurst Prep.

And while a 43-40 setback to Mercyhurst Prep made them 2-2 over the course of the last eight days (and 17-3 on the season), coach Lisa LaVan couldn’t be more proud of her team.

“We are so battle-tested it’s not even funny,” she said. “To come out of there 2-2. We would have liked to be 3-2 or 4-0, but at the end of the day, I’m so proud of them for the way they handled it.

Those games included a 64-58 win over General McLane, followed by the emotional win over Villa on Tuesday, the triple-overtime loss to Harbor Creek on Thursday and Saturday’s game against Mercyhurst Prep.

The combined record of those four teams is 63-18, with some of those losses coming against each other.

On Saturday, the Dragons trailed by 3 with a minute to go, when Margo Loutzenhiser, who scored a game-high 24 points, converted a pair of free throws to make it a 1-point game.

Warren fouled again, and the Lakers (16-5) didn’t convert, leaving the door open.

“We got a good look, it just didn’t fall,” LaVan said.

They have their final home game of the season on Monday against Corry, Senior Night, where Loutzenhiser, Sierra Matson and Alanna Hultberg will be honored.

After that, they have one final regular season game at St. Marys on Friday, with the playoffs on the horizon, beginning Feb. 23.
