Sheffield girls fall to ECC

Sheffield dropped to 2-16 overall and 0-7 in AML Girls Basketball after suffering a 60-19 loss at home Friday evening to Elk County Catholic.

Lily Lauffenburger, Emily Leichtenberger, and Marissa Grubbs led a balanced first quarter for Sheffield, which trailed 14-8 after one period.

“We essentially traded two’s for three’s in the first quarter, and that was a huge difference,” said Sheffield coach Brandon Troutman.

Four of the Lady Crusaders eight 3-point field goals came in that 14-8 advantage.

Elk County opened the second quarter on an 18-0 run before a Grubbs basket put a bandaid on the leak.

“Taylor Newton had a monster second quarter for ECC, and really hit us hard inside,” Troutman added.

Sheffield has a tough time getting any consistency after that, but did have some spurts in which they moved the ball well.

“We ran a few things that we don’t use as often as I’d probably like, and it was nice to get some looks. We had trouble converting but we made some things happen, which will be good to see on film,” Troutman said.

Lauffenburger lead Sheffield in the loss with seven points, Grubbs with six. Leichtenberger has seven rebound for Sheffield, Alyssa Dunham adding five.

ECC’s Newton led all scorers with 19.

Sheffield dropped a 29-10 JV contest. Maddy Roell led Sheffield with five, Kaylee Grubbs with three.

Sheffield hosts Brockway in AML action Monday, a rescheduled game from Jan. 30.
