McMeans, Dragons beat Corry in regular season finale

CORRY, Pa. – Devin McMeans’ hot-shooting continued, and the Warren Dragons got a measure of revenge against Corry in their final game before the District 10 playoffs.

McMeans buried six 3’s in the first quarter, part of a 20-point effort that saw Warren (11-9) come away with a 59-49 victory on Wednesday.

“Dev was on fire, and that really set the tone,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “He had a good game shooting the ball against Bradford and was able to continue to build off of that. That weakside corner 3 was there and Dev was ready to shoot.”

Despite the strong start, Corry hung around, trailing by just five, 33-28 at halftime.

Brandon Elchynski was a big reason why the Beavers kept it close, scoring knocking down three first-half triples of his own.

But the Dragons strong offensive play continued, and it came from a variety of sources.

“Caleb (Ei) hit a 3 from the corner that was a big shot for us, and Ben (Berdine) had an old-fashioned 3-point play at the end of the third and then a 3 out of an inbounds play that really gave us a working margin,” coach Berdine said.

Berdine also noted the ability for his team to take Corry out of it’s 1-3-1 defense, as they grinded the game away in the fourth quarter.

Aidan Morrison had six assists for the Dragons and Griffin Suppa five, while Jake Kupchella led with eight rebounds. Ei and Morrison also had four steals each.

Warren also won the JV game, 54-48. Ryan Rafalski and Thomas Bablak had 15 points each, while Ryan Arnold chipped in with nine.

Up next for Warren is a home date (7 p.m.) with Fort LeBoeuf in the first round of the District 10 Class 5A playoffs on Friday.

The Dragons won both matchups with the Bison this season by a combined 35 points.
