Fresh off 2nd place at districts, Dragons dominate Cambridge Springs
Fresh off a second place finish at the District 10 Class 3A Team Dual Championships Wednesday, Warren wrestlers came out firing in front of their home fans and rolled past Cambridge Springs with a 51-24 win Friday.
The Dragons won five matches via pinfall, with an injury default and two forfeits for extra bonus points.
“The guys are doing everything we ask and it’s starting to come together,” Warren coach Dean Johnson said.
Christian Papalia (113), Avery Smith (120) and Ryan Madigan (126) won the first three matches of the night with pins to set the tone.
“We had a great start from our lightweights,” Johnson said.
Defending state medalist Tye Varndell got the Blue Devils on the board with a 20-5 tech fall at 132, but Donovan Fiscus came right back with a pin at 138 to put the Dragons ahead 24-5.
Cambridge got a pin at 145 and a major decision at 152 to cut the deficit to 24-15.
Zack Zinger and Jackson Carico had arguably the match of the night at 160. Both grapplers scored nearfalls in the first period and wrestled to a 5-5 tie after one. They continued to go at each other through the second, and again both scored nearfalls.
They were deadlocked at 10-10 heading into the final two minutes. Zinger began the period in the bottom position, but was docked a penalty point for a headscissors early on. Carico got hit with a penalty point of his own, then Zinger scored an escape to take a 12-11 lead. With time winding down, Carico took a shot. Zinger caught the better position and got a takedown and nearfall for a 17-11 win.
“We had some nice, exciting matches,” Johnson said.
Jamo Douvlos, in just his fourth match back from injury, had a 10-0 lead over Jacob Jones at 170 when Jones was forced to injury default. MaBrukhe Tagba and Donovan Davies picked up forfeit wins at 182 and 195, respectively, to put Warren ahead 45-15 and seal the match win.
Joey Arnold decked Adam Lesuer in the second period for the final Dragons points of the night. Cambridge got a pin at 285 and Logan Gerow narrowly held off Connor Papalia for an 8-7 win at 106.
“It was a total team effort,” Johnson said. “The guys are unselfish and always ready to go.”
Warren will get some time to rest before holding Senior Night festivities in a match with Corry Wednesday. The Dragons were originally scheduled to host Eisenhower Tuesday, but the match was moved to accommodate the Knights potentially having a dual match Monday if they advance past the 2A D-10 Team Duals Saturday in Sharon.
“We want to wish Eisenhower the best of luck Saturday,” Johnson said. “We’re rooting for them to advance.”
