Eisenhower girls get defensive in win over Union City

UNION CITY, Pa. – The Eisenhower Lady Knights went on the road and turned in a terrific defense effort, earning their 8th win of the season, 40-25 over Union City on Friday.

That performance included a first-quarter blanking of the Lady Bears and a 20-5 lead at halftime for the visitors.

“We struggled a little bit offensively in the first quarter, but we played tremendous team defense in the first half,” said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue.

In particular, Emiley Wheeler locked up UC’s Eliza Reynolds, who came into the game averaging 14.7 points per game. Wheeler and the Lady Knights held her to just six.

Offensively, it was Wheeler, Lydia Giannini and Delaney Chase that did the damage, scoring all 40 Eisenhower (8-12 overall, 6-9 Region 2) points.

Chase finished with a game-high 15 points to go along with five steals, while Giannini had yet another double-double, pulling down 18 rebounds to go along with her 13 points, 3 blocks and 6 steals. Wheeler finished with 12 points.

“We got a little tired in the second half and weren’t quite as good defensively, but still, that showed our potential of what we can do,” Logue said.

Marissa Mattocks had 7 points to pace UC (5-15, 3-12).

The playoff-bound Lady Knights are back in action Monday, hosting Iroquois.
