Eisenhower battles Cochranton; Y’ville, Tidioute, Sheffield fall

Youngsville’s Kamryn Weissinger (22) puts in a layup in front of Iroquois’ Jessica Szymczak (30) during the second quarter of their game at Youngsville High School, Monday, Feb. 4, 2019. Weissinger had four points on the night, but the Braves rolled to a 61-18 win over the Eagles.

Jaidan Martinec led the Cardinals with 19 points and Lexi Moore had 15. The duo combined to drain five of Cochranton’s six 3-pointers on the night.

“We knew from the past that Martinec was a good 3-point shooter, and Moore is leading the team in 3-pointers this year,” Logue said. “We knew we had to be careful of that and we struggled to cover those 3s.”

Eisenhower travels to Union City Friday looking for a season sweep of the Bears and a sixth Region 2 victory.

“We’ve got to be able, at this point and time in the season, to shake it off and we’ve done that all year,” Logue said. “We’ve got to make sure we come ready to play every game and play from the beginning. It doesn’t matter who it is.”

Cochranton won the junior varsity game, 33-11.

Youngsville’s Megan Foley (34) looks for a teammate to inbounds to during the first half of a game against Iroquois at Youngsville High School, Monday, Feb. 4, 2019. The Braves defeated the Eagles, 61-18.

Regan Beaver led the Knights with six points.

IROQUOIS 61, YOUNGSVILLE 18

Iroquois’ stifling defense eventually wore down Youngsville and Angelina Meola poured in 31 points to lead the Lady Braves to a 61-18 win over their hosts Monday.

Meola, District 10’s third-leading scorer, started slowly, but put in 17 of her 31 points in the second and third quarters to help put the game away. Most of those points came as a result of transition baskets.

“They’re relentless,” Youngsville coach Andy Sveda said. “They’re a really good team.”

The Lady Eagles (4-15 overall, 3-10 Region 2) were able to limit what the Lady Braves (16-3, 12-2) were able to do early in the contest. Despite getting steals, the Eagles were able to get back defensively and keep the transition attempts from falling. Eventually, the Braves, winners of 12 straight, got those shots to fall and had a 13-3 lead after the first quarter. Meola really found her rhythm in the second quarter and the Braves built a commanding 35-6 lead at the half.

Erin Dunn led the Eagles with five points. Kamryn Weissinger and Sadie Hoffman added four each in the loss.

Desiree Meola had 13 points and Jazmine Meola added eight in the win.

The Eagles will look to rebound quickly as they travel to Union City today for a Region 2 contest with the Bears.

Youngsville won the junior varsity contest, 28-22.

Mia Rafalski and Taylor Carrington each had eight points in the win.

UNION CITY 58, TIDIOUTE CHARTER 42

Union City outscored Tidioute Charter 17-9 in the third quarter to turn a 5-point halftime lead into a 58-42 win in Tidioute Monday.

The Bears picked up the win despite Bulldogs double-doubles from both Nakiesha Krouse and Angelina Sabella.

“A rough third quarter put us down and we were unable to pull closer than eight points,” TCCS coach Christy Valentine said. “I am pleased with girls stepping up and making more of a team effort. The girls just need to continue to work together, including in the offseason.”

Union City (4-15 overall, 2-11 Region 2) took a 13-6 lead after the first eight minutes, but TCCS (2-16, 0-12) outscored the Bears in the second to pull within five, 27-22, at the half.

Poor shooting from the free throw line by the Bulldogs allowed the Bears to pull away in the third.

“Our foul shooting, 8-20, did us in,” Valentine said.

Union City had three players in double figures, led by Eliza Reynolds’ 19 points. Maddy Drayer had 14 and Marissa Mattocks 11 in the win.

Krouse had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Sabella had 13 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Kelsey Nuttall grabbed a team-high 13 boards.

TCCS honored veterans between the JV and varsity games and all gate fees will be donated to the Warren County Emergeny Veterans Fund.

The Bulldogs head to Cochranton Wednesday.

Union City won the junior varsity game, 34-26.

Sabella led the Bulldogs with 16 points.

BROCKWAY 50, SHEFFIELD 29

A cold shooting night during a January thaw slowed down an aggressive Sheffield Lady Wolverine basketball team Monday evening, dropping a 50-29 decision to visiting Brockway.

“I’m pleased with the effort, pleased that we’re not being as timid as we once were offensively, if we can get some shots to fall we’ll be alright,” said Sheffield coach Brandon Troutman.

A no field goals on 12 first quarter attempts put Sheffield in a bind, as two Emily Leichtenberger free throws were the only tallies in the quarter as Brockway led 11-2 after a period.

A fairly even second quarter began to make things interesting. Sheffield got some turnovers off of their full court pressure and in their man defense, but a 6-0 run by Brockway out the guests up 29-13 at the half.

“Minus their run at the end, I felt we did a much better job in forcing them into something’s they weren’t comfortable with, but they were able to swing the tempo going into the half, and that hurt,” Troutman said.

Troutman complimented the play of Marissa Grubbs, who he said “has started to take some ownership of the team as of late, and I’m proud to see that.”

Grubbs led Sheffield with 10 points and four assists, Lily Lauffenburger added eight points and four assists.

Leichtenberger and Alyssa Dunham continues their cleanup on the glass, Allison Schmader and Halle McLaughlin gave Sheffield valuable minutes as well.

Sheffield dropped a lopsided contest in JV action, Mclaughlin and Kaylee Grubbs leading the way for Sheffield.

Sheffield is 2-17, hosts Smethport in non-conference action Thursday, the second of three home games this week for the Lady Wolverines.
