Boys 200 medley relay team breaks school record; Beyer sets new mark in 200 IM as Dragons sweep Corry on Senior Night

The Warren Area High School swim team had a memorable night on Monday, setting multiple school records, including in the boys 200 medley realy. Team members include Max Harrison, Andrew Beyer, Stephen Ashbaugh and Derek Hahn with a time of 1:58.41

It was Senior Night for the Warren Area High School swim teams against Corry, but it turned out to be a record-breaking night as well.

The boys 200 medley relay team of Andrew Beyer, Stephen Ashbaugh, Max Harrison and Derek Hahn turned in a program record time of 1:58.41, while Beyer broke yet another record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.81.

The boys won the meet 105-68, while the girls rolled to a 120-36 victory.

“It’s one of those moments you build up for when the season,” said Warren coach Russ Beyer. “Breaking a record is icing on the cake.”

It was the third record-breaking performance from Beyer in less than a week, coming off a new mark in the 100 backstroke against Erie.

Warren Area High School senior swimmer Stephen Ashbaugh competes in the 200 medley relay. Ashbaugh was part of a team that included Andrew Beyer, Max Harrison and Derek Hahn that set a school record in the event.

The night was also about the seniors – Taylor Lester, Riley Napolitan, Marcus Bonavita, Trenten Dippold, Cade Johnson, Hunter Smith, Beyer and Ashbaugh.

For the girls, Paige Johnson, Sarah Nugent Katie Beyer, Gabby Hahn and Cara Anderson all turned in dominating performances, while Beyer, Ashbaugh, Harrison, Hahn and Smith did the same on the boys side.

Ellie Hahn was also a new district qualifier, as was Logan Johnson.

Coach Beyer also noted the continued development of the younger swimmers.

“Kaelah Knupp, Grace Pennucci, Sydney Govoni, Evan Turner, they just keep working hard and keep improving. “For the boys, Trenten Dippold, Jason Bonavita, Graham Carr, they’ve made big strides and improvements.

All in all, it was a special night.

“They answered the call,” Beyer said of his team.

The Dragons have one more regular season meet, at McDowell on Wednesday.
