Banner day for Bauer: Eisenhower senior takes first at 220; 10 Knights, Youngsville’s DeSimone advance

Eisenhower’s Easton Hedman flips Maplewood’s Tucker Urey during their 5th place match at the D-10 Section I Tournament at Meadville High School on Saturday.
MEADVILLE, Pa. – Joe Bauer and the Eisenhower Knights had a big day at District 10 Section I wrestling Saturday at Meadville High School.
Bauer powered through the field at 220, beating top-seed Joey King of Maplewood in the finals, 9-4 to win his second consecutive section title, and the Knights had 10 wrestlers in the top seven, all earning a trip to districts at Sharon.
Youngsville’ Jake DeSimone also had an impressive showing, finishing third at 285 to punch his ticket to districts.
Bauer pinned Ryen Phennicie of Seneca in the quarterfinals and followed that up with an 8-3 decision against Dalton Boozer of Cochranton to get to the finals.
“To win a section title is awesome,” said Eisenhower coach Kris Black. “He beat a kid in the finals that he lost to at Tool City and just wrestled a good match. He’s wrestling at a pretty high level right now.”

Eisenhower’s Garrett Head looks up as he takes the top position against Girard’s Marshall Marfinetz during the first period of their third-place match on Saturday at Meadville High School. Head wrestled ‘as good a tournament as anyone,’ per coach Kris Black, and is one of 10 Knights moving on to districts.
Logan Jaquay (113) and Alex Barnett (160) also were impressive in earning their way to the finals, while Josh Bortz, Easton Hedman, Garrett Head, Cael Black, Ethan Chambers, Jesse Gourley and Gannon Jaquay are all moving on as well.
Jaquay won by fall and decision to get to the first place match, and Barnett by tech fall and major decision.
In the finals, Barnett lost a heartbreaker, 3-2 against top-seed Jason Bratt of Harbor Creek, while Jaquay, the top seed in his weight class, lost an 11-5 decision to No. 2 seed Andrew Brest of General McLane.
“Different approaches for both of those guys … we had a pretty good plan going in,” Black said. “Just came up a little short. Logan was kind of under the weather all week and I’m not sure if he was 100 percent.
“Alex wrestled well. He had a good game plan going in, stuck with it to a T and had a chance to win it at the end. When your wrestling a state-ranked guy like that, having a chance to win in the last 10 to 15 seconds, you did a lot of things right. He’ll feel good about that.

Eisenhower’s Gannon Jaquay gets his hand raised by the official after pinning Seneca’s David Hall in their 7th place match on Saturday at Meadville. Jaquay needed the win to move on to districts, and he got it.
“Logan with Brest, we know what Andrew Brest brings. He’s tough. It was a good match. The beauty about sections, whether you win or lose in the final, it doesn’t matter for the next weekend. Logan wrestled a real good tournament and we have some good stuff to work on this week.”
DeSimone, meanwhile, started things off on Friday with a pin of Fort LeBoeuf’s Lance McLaughlin, before earning a 7-5 decision over Cambridge Springs’ Jerry Mosconi in the quarterfinals.
A loss to No. 2 seed Jordan Schell of Girard sent him to the consolations, where he pinned county foe Gourley and had another pin over General McLane’s Hunter Dickson in 2:26 for third place.
Bortz also battled in the consolations to a fourth-place finish at 138.
A quarterfinal loss to Union City’s Judah Gardner sent him down, where he rattled off three straight wins – by pin, decision and major decision, before a decision loss in the third-place match.
“We took 13 guys and took 10 of the 13 to districts,” Black said. “I could really highlight everybody. A lot of those guys were in the consys coming back through. It says a lot about their determination. They just wrestled well, as a team, as a whole.”
Head and Hedman had similar situations, battling to fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively.
In the consolations, Hedman won via pin and tech fall before losing a decision and then getting another pin the fifth-place match.
Head, meanwhile, won three straight matches in the consolations to get to the third-place match, before falling to Marshall Marfinetz of Girard for the second time.
“Josh Bortz, Easton Hedman and Garrett Head all wrestled really well,” Black said. “Garrett wrestled as good a tournament as anyone in a really tough weight class.
The Talented freshman Black got to the semifinals before losing a pair of back-to-back close decisions to Hayden Linkerhof of Corry and Chevy Blake of Maplewood. He rallied, however, for a 5-1 decision over Harbor Creek’s Nick Kaday in the fifth-place match.
“He lost a 2-point match to the Corry kid, and he lost to him by two earlier and also beat him this season,” coach Black said. “It’s one of those things that can go either way, and it just didn’t go our way. I thought he showed some good maturity, being a freshman.”
Gourley and Ethan Chambers each finished sixth, while Gannon Jaquay won his seventh-place match via pinfall against Seneca’s David Hall to earn his trip to districts.
“Gannon Jaquay, in a do or die match did what he needed to do,” coach Black said. “He’s a scrappy kid. He doesn’t have the best technique on are

Youngsville’s Sam Hoover finished one win short of districts, dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Hall.
Now the attention moves to districts on Friday and Saturday at Sharon, with the ultimate goal being a trip to states.
“Everybody is happy to move on,” Black said. “Some of the guys just aren’t satisfied. As a team, they’re happy but not content. They wanted to win it, and we finished 4th. Even the guys that didn’t make it, they were upset they didn’t make it. I thought we overachieved a little bit.
“This is a group that really wants to do well. They don’t just talk about it, they put the work in. Our practices we’re real crip last week and it showed this weekend. Hopefully, we have the same type of practices this week and it pays off.”
