Youngsville, Sheffield fall on the road

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS, Pa. – When Youngsville and Cambridge Springs met in Youngsville earlier this season, the Eagles kept the game close until the waning seconds.

The Blue Devils made sure there wouldn’t be a repeat of that performance on their home court Friday. Cambridge raced out to a 20-4 first quarter lead and ran away with a 64-46 Region 3 win.

“We got dominated on the boards and the score showed it,” Youngsville coach Jesse DeLoof said.

Lance Welker, Trent Wheeler and Matt Andrews took advantage of those second chance opportunities-with Andrews and Welker each dropping a pair of 3s-in the first half to push the Blue Devils (9-6 overall, 5-2 Region 3) advantage to 43-18 at the break.

“They had success on the boards early and therefore continued to crash. If we keep them off the boards in the first half, I don’t think they continue to send four guys to the glass for 32 minutes like they did.”

All three players scored in double figures. Welker led the way with 16 points, Andrews added 15 and Wheeler 14.

Gage Hendrickson led the Eagles (7-9, 2-6) with a game-high 18 points.

If Youngsville is going to make a late push for the playoffs, it must start Tuesday. The Eagles host Maplewood Tuesday in a key Region 3 match. The teams have split their two previous meetings this season.

If the attitude after Friday’s game is any indication, Youngsville will be ready to defend their home court.

“We had a player after the game make the comment to the team that we can’t become comfortable with losing or accept defeat,” DeLoof said. “I couldn’t have said it better myself. The biggest game of the year is Tuesday. We will be ready.”

Cambridge won the junior varsity contest, 57-29.

Dominic Dell led the Eagles with 10 points while Michael Crane buried his sixth 3-pointer of the season.
