Youngsville pulls away for win over Sheffield

Youngsville’s Lily Lindell (12) collides with Sheffield’s Marissa Grubbs (11) during the fourth quarter of their game at Sheffield High School, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019. The Eagles defeated the Wolverines, 38-19.

In its win over Tidioute Monday, Youngsville pushed the tempo and took advantage of transition chances to pick up the win.

The Eagles slowed things down at Sheffield Wednesday, but the result was the same. A win, 38-19, over a cross-county rival. Youngsville spent almost the entire game running its half-court offense.

“We started really good,” Youngsville coach Andy Sveda said. “We got some easy buckets.”

Youngsville (4-11) opened with an 8-2 run. Sheffield (2-10) clawed back in it and only trailed 10-2 after the first eight minutes. The Eagles essentially put the game away in the second quarter. They outscored the Wolverines 10-2 in the frame as Sheffield was unable to get shots to fall, even when they had good looks at the basket.

“We just can’t, or don’t, score,” Sheffield coach Brandon Troutman said. “It doesn’t matter where we are, we just can’t score. We’re not hitting when we shoot and we’re passing up good chances.”

Sheffield’s Annabel Sheldon (44) fires a jump shot over Youngsville’s Megan Foley (34) and Sadie Hoffman (33) during the second quarter of their game at Sheffield High School, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019. The Eagles got the best of their cross county rivals with a 38-19 win.

Youngsville had a 20-8 advantage at the half.

Sheffield connected on some field goals in the third quarter to keep it interesting, but couldn’t get enough stops to cut into the Youngsville lead. The Wolverines went cold again in the fourth quarter as the Eagles salted the game away.

“We were pressuring them to shoot outside and to rush their shots,” Sveda said. “We knew if we could rebound and push it up the floor we could do well.”

Sadie Hoffman had a game-high 15 points, while Erin Dunn added 11.

Alison Schmader, Emily Leichtenberger and Annabel Sheldon each had five points for the Wolverines.

Youngsville’s Mallory Sherrard puts up a short jumper during the second quarter of a game against Sheffield in the Ralph Santo gymnasium, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019. The Eagles defeated the Wolverines, 38-19.

Sheffield hits the road Friday for a matchup at DuBois Central Catholic.

Youngsville will look to go 3-3 against Warren County teams this week when the Eagles travel to Eisenhower Friday.

“Hopefully, we’ll be up for it,” Sveda said.

Youngsville won the junior varsity game 35-16.

Taylor Carrington had a game-high 12 points in the win, while Chloe Senz added eight and Lily Lindell seven for the Eagles.

Youngsville’s Kamryn Weissinger (22) gets her hand on the shot of Sheffield’s Alison Schmader (1) during the third quarter of their game at Sheffield High School, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019.

Sheldon led the Wolverines with eight points.
