Youngsville boys get revenge on Maplewood

GUYS MILLS, Pa. – The Youngsville Eagles got a measure of revenge on Thursday, rallying from an early double-digit deficit to earn a 47-45 win over Region 3 foe Maplewood.

The Tigers handed the Eagles an overtime setback in the Sheffield Sports Booster Tip-Off Tournament last week, but it was Youngsville that was able to finish it off this time around.

The Eagles (4-5, overall, 1-2 Region 3) got 15 points and 15 rebounds from Gage Hendrickson, while Joe Mack added 8.

“This was a good team win,” said Youngsville coach Jesse DeLoof. “All eight guys that played made a contribution. Gage had his double-double against a Maplewood team that has two physical bigs.”

Maplewood (3-5, 0-3) led 17-7 after the first quarter, but Youngsville rallied to cut it to 6 at halftime and tied it and the end of the third, 38-38, before closing the game out in the fourth.

Brady Olewine hit a big corner 3 that put the Eagles up 43-40 and Austin Peterson followed with a layup that made it 45-40.

“From there, we played winning basketball,” DeLoof said. “Taking care of the ball and continuing to play good team defense.”

Camden Mattocks and Joel Cox had 13 points each for the Tigers.

“In November, we said we needed to survive our first nine, eight of which were on the road,” DeLoof said. “We are 4-5 with a big game on Saturday against a good, scrappy Tidioute team.”

Maplewood won the JV game, 34-23. Ethan Kesterholt had nine points and Xavier Mowrey six for the Eagles.
