Warren swimmers sweep Mercyhurst Prep for second time

Warren’s Stephen Ashbaugh checks his time while waiting for the other swimmers to finish the 50 free during a meet with Mercyhurst Prep at the Warren County YMCA, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019. Ashbaugh’s win helped lead the Dragons to a 109-58 victory over the Lakers.
New year, new location, same result for the Warren swimmers as they swept visiting Mercyhurst Prep Thursday.
The girls beat the Lakers by the exact same score, 85-84, they did when they swam at Mercyhurst in December. The boys won 109-58.
“It was a total team effort,” Warren coach Russ Beyer said. “Both teams have their specialty events and we trade off. We challenged them before the meet and told them that Mercyhurst Prep was looking for a bit of revenge. We knew it would be close, but we came out on top.”
Paige Johnson became the Dragons newest district qualifier, surpassing the qualifying mark in the 200 IM.
“She’s been chasing the 200 IM and got it today,” Beyer said. “That feels good. You work hard and keep plugging away and hit those milestones. I’m happy for her.”

Warren’s Katie Beyer takes a breath while swimming the 200 free during a meet with Mercyhurst Prep at the Warren County YMCA, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019. Beyer finished second in the event to help the Dragons secure an 85-84 win.
Despite some swimmers battling illness and injury, Beyer said they recorded time drops throughout the meet.
“We had some kids who’ve been sick and battling injuries and they really stepped up,” he said. “We had a lot of time drops. We tell the kids to just keep chipping away. Get one percent better everyday. It’s like you’re sculpting or making a piece of art. You have to work at certain things for a while, then everything comes together for a masterpiece at the end.”
Taylor Lester and Carter Anderson both dropped eight seconds in the 100 back, Hunter Smith set season bests in the 100 fly and 100 breast and Seebe Proper dropped seven seconds in the 400 free.
“Seebe really had a tough meet doing both the IM and the 400 free,” Beyer said. “Not too many kids can do that and she prevailed. My hat’s off to her.”
The Dragons are scheduled to head to Titusville Monday.

Warren’s Derek Hahn approaches the turn in the butterfly stage of the 200 IM during a meet against Mercyhurst Prep at the Warren County YMCA, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019. Hahn won the event, as well as the 100 fly, to help the Dragons to a 109-58 win over the Lakers.
