Lady Knights fall victim to hot-shooting Maplewood

Eisenhower’s Maddie Sleeman brings the ball up during Monday’s game against Maplewood at Eisenhower High School. Maplewood earned a 67-35 win.

It was raining 3’s at Eisenhower on Monday, but unfortunately for the Lady Knights, they weren’t for the home team.

Maplewood drilled 12 triples en route to a 67-35 in Region 2 action on Monday, including a 14-0 run to start the game.

“They have good shooters,” said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue. “We weren’t able to consistently get a hand in their face and it just kind of snowballed.”

From the midway point of the first quarter until late in the second quarter, the two teams were dead even, with Emiley Wheeler and Lydia Giannini doing most of the damage in the scoring column for Eisenhower.

But Maplewood’s Isabelle Snyder, the Lady Tigers’ leading scorer on the season, connected on a pair of 3’s before the half to push the lead north of 20 points.

Eisenhower’s Lydia Giannini splits Maplewood defenders Kaysea Thomas (4) and Megan Mangus (23) during the first half of Monday’s game at Eisenhower High School.

“We’ve talked about coming out hard out of the gate, and tonight we didn’t do that,” Logue said. “They (Maplewood) had intensity and we didn’t.”

Eisenhower came out in the second half on a 7-2 run, courtesy of an old-school 3-point play and a pair of free throws from Giannini and a strong move to the bucket by Wheeler.

But, as was the case all night, the 3-ball was lurking again for Maplewood (12-7 overall, 9-4 Region 2).

Snyder and Jordan Roser, who also had 17 points, hit 3’s on consecutive possessions, and Eisenhower (7-11, 5-8) didn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

Giannini finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and two blocks, yet another double-double for the senior standout, while Wheeler had 11 points and nine rebounds, Lilee Renninger three blocks and Alexis Courtney three assists.

Eisenhower’s Delaney Chase drives along the baseline during the first half against Maplewood.

Cassidy Mangus was also in double figures scoring for Maplewood with 12 points.

Eisenhower now has a week off from game action before hosting Cochranton next Monday.

Maplewood also won the JV game, 41-16. Raegon Beaver had five points and Ellie Strausser four for EHS.
