Husted, Beavers best Dragons

Chase Husted poured in 26 points to lead visiting DuBois to a 62-48 win over Warren Saturday.

Husted scored 14 of his points in the second half as the Beavers turned a 5-point halftime lead into a 14-point victory.

“This was a good opportunity for us stepping out of region play,” Warren coach Jeff Berdine said. “Husted played solid against us. Every time they needed a big basket, they went to him and he delivered.”

The Dragons (5-5) were essentially even with the Beavers (9-2) through the first quarter, but a Lennon Lindholm 3-pointer had DuBois ahead 13-10 after the first eight minutes. Nick Farrell and Alex Kovalyak each connected from behind the arc in the second to hold Warren at bay as DuBois took a 29-24 lead into the half.

“It was a back-and-forth game,” Berdine said.

More 3-pointers in the second half prevented Warren from cutting into the lead. It was Jonathan Cruz and Justin Manduley in the third quarter for DuBois. The Beavers led 44-36 after three, but hadn’t outscored the Dragons by more than three points in any individual quarter.

“They took a couple 8-10 point leads that we were able to get back down,” Berdine said.

That changed in the fourth as Husted scored eight of his 26 points in the period, Manduley added another 3-pointer and Cruz went 5-6 from the line to close out the win.

“Manduley had a big corner 3 when we were trying to make a run,” Berdine said. “They made all their free throws.”

Husted was consistent throughout. He scored six, four and six points in the first three quarters. Alex Beers added 11 points and Cruz finished with 10.

Jake Kupchella led the Dragons with 11 points and five rebounds. Mitch Grosch added 10 points in the loss.

“This was a good game for us,” Berdine said. “I didn’t think we played bad. They played good defense. Offensivey we have to have guys step up. We had some guys not score like they normally do as well and that’s a credit to their defense.”

Caleb Ei, the Dragons leading scorer, was held to just four points thanks to a defensive adjustment by the Beavers.

“They really felt Caleb would get their kids in foul trouble, so they put Husted on him,” Berdine said. “They felt he would be long enough to play him outside. That was a difficult matchup. They did a good job on the back line of being in helpside defense. Whenever we put the ball on the floor, Beers was there.”

Warren travels to Fort LeBoeuf Tuesday for a Region 6 matchup with the Bison.

“We have two huge games in our region this week,” Berdine said. “We’re expecting (LeBoeuf) to sit in a zone most of the game. We’ll have to make some adjustments and make shots.”

Warren won the junior varsity contest, 50-32.

Ben Salapek led a balanced scoring attack with nine points. Ben Berdine had eight, Ryan Arnold added seven and Ryan Rafalski and Payton Barnes had six each.
