MEADVILLE, Pa. – Warren and Meadville wrestled 14 varsity matches during their dual match Wednesday.

The Dragons won seven, and the Bulldogs won seven. The difference was five of the seven wins by the home team were via pinfall and Meadville came away with a 40-30 win.

“All of our guys gave great effort tonight,” Warren coach Dean Johnson said. “The only difference was the fact that they earned more bonus points in their wins.”

Austin Chess (170) and Max Brown (182) each won via pinfall to stake Meadville to a 12-0 lead to start the match. Joey Arnold’s forfeit win at 195 cut the deficit in half, but Tom Pollard got those six points right back with a pin at 220.

Billy Anderson decked Benedict Heins in 1:03 to give the Dragons their first pinfall win of the evening.

Connor Papalia and William Terwilliger put on the match of the night at 106 pounds. Papalia got a takedown in the first for a 2-0 lead and neither wrestler scored again until the third. Terwilliger started the third in the down position and got an escape and takedown to take a 3-2 lead. Papalia escaped, then scored a late takedown to come away with the 5-3 win.

The decision got the Dragons to within three at 18-15, but the Bulldogs came right back with a pin at 113 and a forfeit win at 120 to double the advantage to 30-15.

Avery Smith (126) and Donovan Fiscus (132) grabbed 3-0 and 8-7 decisions, respectively, to close the gap. Alex Anderson’s first period pinfall victory over Tyler Powell brought Warren to within three again at 30-27 and Kyle Swick’s 4-1 decision win at 145 tied the match at 30-30.

Meadville got a major decision win at 152 and pinfall victory at 160 to come away with the 40-30 win.

The Dragons now get a week to rest and prepare for their next contest, a dual match at Harbor Creek Dec. 27.
