Three Knights win individual titles at STWOA

SALAMANCA, NY – It was a big weekend for the Eisenhower Knights, as they claimed three individual champions on their way to a fifth-place team finish at the Southern Tier Wrestling Officials Association Holiday Classic Tournament.

The Warren Dragons also had a number of solid performances on their way to an eighth place team finish in the 20-team field.

Winning individual crowns for the Knights were senior Alex Barnett at 160, junior Logan Jaquay at 113 and freshman Cael Black at 195.

Jaquay pinned Port Allegany’s Bryent Johnson in the second period to win gold, while Barnett also won by fall in the second period over Port’s Roland Thompson.

Black, meanwhile, claimed his 195-pound crown via a 14-3 major decision over Maple Grove’s Kyle Trim.

The Knights’ Joe Bauer also advanced to the finals, where he fell in a 6-4 decision against Randolph’s Jacob Zachar at 220.

“Those guys all had really good tournaments,” said Eisenhower coach Kris Black. “I was really happy for Alex Barnett. Last year he had a chance to place high at this tournament and tore his ankle up pretty good and missed most of first half of year. This was fantastic for him. He deserves it. He works so hard. He was pretty dominant.

“Logan Jaquay looked really good. He’s picked up where he left off last year. He was aggressive during the matches. Cael wrestled a great tournament, being an unseeded kid as a freshman. For him to come through the bracket the way he did … he not only wrestled well, he wrestled smart. As a freshman, that’s really good

“Joey Bauer, he had a great tournament up until the finals, he just had one little mishap.”

For the Dragons, Joey Arnold led the way with a third-place finish at 220, getting a major decision against Chautauqua Lake’s Ben Szymanowski.

Also earning a third-place finish was Eisenhower’s Garrett Head at 145 via a 6-1 decision over Ryan Nugent. On his way to third, Head also got a bit of redemption, beating Falconer’s Nick Seager, who he lost to in a tight bout on Thursday, 10-8.

“Garrett lost his first one of the day and came all the way back for third,” noted Black. “He put together a really nice Saturday.”

Also for the Dragons, Zack Zinger earned a fifth-place finish, while Mabrukhe Tagba, John Fankhouser and Donovan Fiscus all finished sixth.

Also earning medals for Eisenhower were Josh Bortz (5th at 138), Easton Hedman (6th at 120) and Jeremy Card (6th at heavyweight).

Bortz battled all the way back to the medal stand after losing his first match on Friday.

“You lose that first one, it’s tough … it’s a long road back. Great job by Josh,” said Black. “Jeremy Card and Easton Hedman put together strong tournaments too.”

The Knights have a busy week of Region 3 matches, hosting Maplewood on Tuesday and traveling to Cochranton on Thursday.

Warren has its Region 5 opener on Wednesday at Meadville.
