Strong start lifts Tidioute past Ike

It was raining 3’s for the host Tidioute Bulldogs against county foe Eisenhower on Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Williams made five triples on his way to a 17-point effort and Patrick Shields had 3, part of his game-high 18 points as the Bulldogs rebounded from a tough loss to Union City the night before with a 60-44 win.

It was all Williams early in the game, as he hit four of his five 3’s in the first quarter, helping Tidioute (4-1) build a 21-7 lead.

“We stressed to him that he was going to get the looks and he knocked them down,” said Tidioute coach Terry Cotterman. “That’s the great thing about this team, they’re team-oriented and they don’t care who scores.”

It was a successful, albeit busy week for the Bulldogs, as they played four games in six days, winning three of them.

Jared Veasey, who missed the game against Union City, came back strong with 12 points.

Eisenhower played the Bulldogs just about even after the first quarter. Jared Martone is quickly emerging for the Knights, and he led them once again with 14 points. Zane Alexander and Jake Venman added 9 each.

“We were a little behind defensively, but the kids played well,” Cotterman said.

Shields had 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals, Veasey 9 rebounds, Maison Deloe 4 assists and Williams 4 steals.

Cotterman stressed the importance of continuing to improve defensively, as well as needing to be better than the sub-50 percent they were against the Knights from the free throw line.

“We focus one game at a time,” Cotterman said. “We’ll go into practice on Monday and be happy, but the kids know what the goal is. They don’t get too high or too low.”

That being said, they are off to a good start, and will have a week of practice before they welcome a talented Cambridge Springs team to Tidioute on Saturday.

“They’re (Cambridge Springs) a talented team, but we’ll be ready,” he said.
