Sheffield girls beat Youngsville in consolation game

Youngsville’s Sadie Hoffman drives as Sheffield’s Rosemary Nelson defends during their consolation game on Saturday.

Down 19-15 in the fourth quarter, Youngsville’s Sadie Hoffman dropped in a three with 2:45 left to play to pull the Eagles within one.

Sheffield responded at the foul line seconds later when Annabel Sheldon sunk two game clinching free throws. Eagles’ Mallory Sherrard would add a layup with just over two minutes left, but the young Wolverine defense was able to hold the one-point lead in the consolation game at the Sheffield Sports Boosters Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon, winning 21-20.

“We had that spurt in the fourth where I preached during a timeout to be patient and just take layups,” said Sheffield head coach Brandon Troutman. “Then we went out and got a little crazy, but we held it in and were able to ice it away.”

Hoffman made three three-pointers and led the Eagles with 13 points, however Youngsville head coach Andy Sveda was disappointed in the team’s all-around shooting throughout the entirety of the game.

“We missed 71 shots, and that kind of explains the game,” said Sveda. “We didn’t hustle, there was no enthusiasm. We weren’t running our plays and that’s what killed us. We were getting good shots when we would run plays and taking bad shots when we weren’t running plays.”

Sheffield’s Tyler Hepinger goes up to block a shot against Jamestown (PA) in their consolation game in the Sheffield Sports Boosters Tip-Off Tournament.

Rosemary Nelson had a strong first half, going one of two at the line and scoring three other times, earning herself an All-Tournament selection while also leading the Wolverines in points.

Sheldon and Alyssa Dunham tied with four points apiece behind Nelson.

“It’s nice to get a win this early in the season,” said Troutman. “It’s been a struggle for us to do that the last few years.”

SHEFFIELD 56

Coming off of an overtime loss Friday night in their opening game of Sheffield Sports Booster Tip-Off Tournament, the Wolverines were hoping to rebound with Saturday’s consolation matchup against Jamestown. However, despite staying with the Muskies for much of the first quarter, Sheffield fell 79-56.

“We were missing one of our big guys, one of our key components in Mitch McNeal, and we just couldn’t deal with all the height.” said Sheffield Head Coach Mike Knapp. “They’re very athletic big guys, and they just got out and ran and we didn’t transition well and that is what really hurt us in the end.”

Freshman Tony Richards, after putting up 13 the previous night, started the scoring off for the Wolverines sinking two free throws and giving Sheffield their only lead of the game, 2-0. Richards went on to drop two three-pointers in the second quarter and finish with eight points.

Down 46-23 coming into the second half, Sheffield’s Tyler Hepinger who had only two-points thus far, nailed four three-pointers while going one of four at the line to give the Wolverines a strong second-half performance. Hepinger led Sheffield with 19 points, followed by Jakob Vinopal’s 14.

“We came out in the second half and looked at it like it was zero-zero,” said Knapp of the first half deficient. “I feel like in the second half they were able to attack the zone a little bit better and it’s just things we have to work on. They’re a young team and they’re learning.”
