Number of standouts for Wolverines in close setback to Coudy

Sheffield’s Jacob Disshon puts his hands up in triumph after earning a pin in his 160-pound bout against Coudersport’s Dylan Hajzus on Tuesday in the Wolverines’ home opener.

There’s a lot to be excited about with the Sheffield Wolverines wrestling program.

And while a 39-35 setback to Coudersport wasn’t the ideal outcome in their home opener, there was a lot to build on, and a number of impressive performances.

“That was an exciting match,” said Sheffield coach Jack Rice. “It went exactly how I planned, except for Caden Smead getting hurt at 132.”

Smead had to exit his match against Dylan Kelly, which was scoreless in the second period, no doubt a tough break for both him and the Wolverines.

But they battled.

Sheffield’s Ethan Finch controls Coudersports’s Logan Rogers during their 170-pound match.

In the blink of an eye, almost literally, the course of the match began to tilt toward the Wolverines, with pins courtesy of Cooper Traister at 138 and Kevin Marfink at 145.

The pair needed just 34 and 30 seconds respectively to earn 12 points for Sheffield.

A Thomas Wilson 8-1 decision over Logan Mead sealed the match for the Falcons, but the Wolverines ended the night strong with two more pins from Jacob Disshon and Ethan Finch.

Disshon dominated his match, leading 13-4 at the time of his pin in the second period.

Finch, who was coming off a 5-0 performance at the Ridgway Duals on Saturday, was equally impressive, leading Logan Rogers 9-0 at the time of his fall, also in the second .

Sheffield’s Cooper Traister is congratulated by coach Jack Rice after pinning Coudersport’s Wyatt Morales.

“We’re young and we’re getting a lot better,” said Rice, who has just one senior, Nick Knowles, who won via forfeit. “It’s just going to keep building and building and building. And we have the number now. I’m proud of how the boys wrestled tonight.”
