Knight wrestlers impressive again in victory over Maplewood

Eisenhower’s Gannon Jaquay tries to gain leverage on Maplewood’s Tucker Urey during their 132-pound match at Eisenhower High School, Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018. A late reversal propelled Jaquay to a 5-3 decision over Urey and the Knights went on to defeat the Tigers, 51-24.

Eisenhower wrestlers kept the momentum going from a fifth place finish at the STWOA Tournament with a 51-24 win over visiting Maplewood Tuesday.

Five Knights picked up pinfall victories and three won via forfeit.

Cael Black (195) and Joe Bauer (220) each won with second period pins to start the match.

“Those guys had a strong start and set the tone for us,” Eisenhower coach Kris Black said. “We just kept the momentum going.”

Maplewood’s Joey King got the Tigers on the board with a pin at 285, but the Knights gained control of the match with forfeit victories at 113, 120 and 126.

Eisenhower’s Ethan Chambers (top) prepares to get into position on Maplewood’s Jesse McFadden during their 170-pound match.

The 132-pound match between Eisenhower’s Gannon Jaquay and Maplewood’s Tucker Urey went down to the wire … literally.

Jaquay held a 3-1 advantage heading into the third period. Urey chose the down position to start the period and it looked like Jaquay would be able to ride Urey out to grab the decision. With 24 seconds left, Urey completed a reversal to tie it at 3-3. The match appeared headed for overtime, but with just 5 seconds to go, Jaquay reversed Urey and held on for a 5-3 win.

“Gannon wrestled really well,” Black said.

Josh Bortz (138) and Garrett Head (145) followed with first period pins, both occurring at the 1:19 mark.

Jesse Parker picked up the Tigers’ second win of the night at 152. Parker and Nate Holt battled through two periods before Parker was able to turn Holt to his back and put shoulders to mat midway through the third.

Eisenhower’s Garrett Head attempts to get both of Maplewood’s Austin Parker’s shoulders to the mat during their 145-pound match.

Alex Barnett got the points right back for Eisenhower at 160, as he decked Logan Gross early in the third.

“Alex is wrestling the best he ever has,” Black said. “He’s in control and looks really good. He missed so much time (last year) due to injury. Now he’s showing what he’s able to do.”

Jesse (170) and JD McFadden (182) ended the match with a pair of pins for Maplewood.

The Knights close out the first part of their season with a trip to Cochranton Thursday, then get a week off before getting into their tough January schedule.

“I’m glad our schedule was like that (four duals and a tournament in a two-week period),” Black said. “Over that week (off) we’ll have time to do some things. January is going to be a meat-grinder, but if we can get through Thursday healthy we’ll be in good shape.”

The referee signals 2 points for Eisenhower’s Nate Holt as he locks up Maplewood’s Jesse Parker during their 152-pound match at Eisenhower High School, Tuesday.
