Dragon swimmers stay hot with sweep of Bradford

Warren’s Andrew Beyer takes his mark prior to the start of the 200IM during a meet against Bradford at the Warren County YMCA, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018. Beyer finished first, and the Dragons swept the event on their way to a 117-44 win over the Owls.

Warren’s swimmers continued their strong start to the season with a sweep of visiting Bradford Wednesday.

The boys dominated an outmanned Owls team, 117-44, while the girls came away with a 98-80 victory.

“We knew the girls team was going to be close,” Warren coach Russ Beyer said. “The boys have some decent swimmers, but lack quantity.”

Logan Johnson showed off multiple talents during his first meet of the year. The freshman kicked things off with a stirring rendition of the national anthem, then went out and recorded district qualifying times in the 100 free and 100 breast.

“Logan is a talented individual,” Beyer said. “This was his first meet and he was champing at the bit. They push each other, these kids. He wanted to show that he belongs and he definitely proved that.”

Warren’s Cara Anderson (right) pulls ahead of teammate Sophie Olson in the 200 free during a meet with Bradford at the Warren County YMCA, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018. Anderson beat Olson to the wall by one second to win the event.

The girls 400 free relay team of Ellie Hahn, Katie Beyer, Sarah Nugent and Sophie Olson qualified for districts and a number of other swimmers either set personal records, or swam events for the first time.

Naomi Hahn had a personal best in the 200 free, a race in which she closed the gap in the final length to complete the sweep for the Dragons.

“She’s been working on her turns and that last turn came down to who wanted it more,” Beyer said. “She said, ‘I got this,’ turned it on and pulled it out at the end.”

Eva Turner (200 IM) and Seebe Proper (100 fly) swam their respective events for the first time and Beyer was pleased with what he saw.

“Eva did well,” he said. “We can fine tune some of the things she needs to work on. She’s very smooth in the water.

Warren’s Ellie Hahn breaks the surface of the water after touching the wall to finish first in the 50 free during a meet against Bradford at the Warren County YMCA, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018. Hahn edged out the Owls’ Julia Moini for first place and the girls went on to win 98-80.

“(Proper) did the fly for the first time and it’s a tough event if you’re not accustomed to it,” Beyer continued. “I told her, ‘the first time is the hardest time.'”

The Dragons will get right back in the water tomorrow when they travel to Meadville for what should be a tight contest with the Bulldogs.

“We’re getting to the end of a rough couple weeks (four dual meets plus an invitational), it’s been pretty grue

ling,” Beyer said. “We’ve got one meet tonight, one tomorrow, then we can relax and enjoy Christmas and get back to it.

“Tomorrow’s going to be a showdown,” he added. “Meadville was at the invitational Saturday. We were minus a couple guys and they beat us in points. I think both boys and girls meets will be nip and tuck. We’re ready.”
