As community cheers, Lady Dragons staying in the moment

The Warren bench cheers during Game 3 against Thomas Jefferson.

One of the things I admire most about sports is the opportunity they provide to bring people and communities together.

And what has happened with the Warren Area High School volleyball team certainly qualifies as that.

It was amazing to see the gym at Punxsutawney High School filled to the rafters with Dragon fans on Saturday. The usual suspects were in attendance, namely the families of the girls, as well as the Flannel Panel.

There was a large contingent of Warren volleyball alumni there as well, as they heaped praise and well wishes to this current group of Lady Dragons beforehand.

And then there were plenty of others who simply wanted to come and support a group of young women who have brought this community together to stand up and cheer.

The Flannel Panel has been cheering on their state semifinalist volleyball team all season.

And it’s not just Warren.

Players, coaches and students from Sheffield, Youngsville and Eisenhower have all been in attendance throughout this playoff run that is now just two wins shy of a state championship.

“The support from this community has been great,” said coach Mike Dolan. “All the things in the paper with the former players … it’s just such a great thing for Warren.”

And you couldn’t hand-pick a better group to do it.

They are talented and driven, yes, but they also have so many other qualities that make them a great team.

In short, they are easy to root for.

They are model student-athletes, representing everything that is right with high school sports.

“What better ambassadors than these guys,” Dolan said. “The way they handle themselves, the way they play. They’re just fantastic.”

It’s a team led by the senior class of Celia Chase, Julia Lobdell, Lydia Latimer, Ellie Lobdell, Kadee Merenick and Trinity Wennberg that knows that, no matter what happens, they are entering the final week of their season.

And they don’t want it to end.

“As seniors, we know that any practice could be our last practice, any game could be our last game,” said Julia Lobdell after the quarterfinal win over Thomas Jefferson on Saturday. “We’re just trying to take it all in.”

And that’s exactly what they have done. They are staying in the moment.

It’s a moment that isn’t too big for them, even if they are doing something that is rarely seen at Warren Area High School, or at any Warren County school.

They are just a group that’s doing something they love to do together.

“People would never think that a team from Warren would be in the Final Four,” said senior Ellie Lobdell.

The last team from Warren County to accomplish this feat was Eisenhower baseball in 2015, which made it all the way to the state title game before losing.

Before that, it was the Warren softball team in 2000 that had the same accomplishment.

And before that, you have to go back to 1966 cross country to find the last state championship team at Warren.

As they get to take on defending state champion Knoch in the semifinals on Tuesday (7 p.m., Clarion High School), they know that they have the support of an entire community behind them.

And, as their head coach said, it couldn’t be happening to a better group.
