Shafer was participating in a fundraiser event where participants tried to hit specific targets while serving. They raised $67 dollars during their event Monday, and they are donating the proceeds from 50/50 drawings.
Coming into the season with a young, inexperienced team, Sheffield volleyball knew it would experience its fair share of ups and downs.
While the Wolverines passed well during a loss to Ridgway Monday, they were unable to replicate that effort at home Thursday as they were swept by visiting Johnsonburg.
“Our passing was awesome Monday,” Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay said. “That was not the case today. We had 38 serve receives that were off target or errors.”
The Rams raced out to a 7-0 lead to start the first set. Sheffield tried to climb back in and got to within four at 11-7. A pair of service errors during the rally limited the Wolverines’ ability to string points together.
“We can’t spot teams six or seven points at the beginning,” Lemay said.

Sheffield was able to get within a point several times (11-10, 18-17 and 19-8) but couldn’t get the penultimate point to tie or take the lead. Johnsonburg went on to a 25-21 win.
Johnsonburg grabbed a six point lead, 8-2, to start the second set before Sheffield began to claw its way back. The Wolverines got as close as four, 16-12, but the Rams put the set away with a 25-16 win.
The third set began more evenly as the teams played to a 4-4 tie. Johnsonburg began to pull away, but Sheffield tied it again at 11. The Rams extended the lead again, but the Wolverines clawed their way back to a 17-16 deficit. Another service error allowed Johnsonburg to begin the methodical end to the match and the Rams eventually won the set, 25-18.
“We can’t run our offense unless we’re passing well,” Lemay said.
Emily Leichtenberger had five service points and six kills for the Wolverines. Annabel Sheldon had four kills, Lily Lauffenberger added six service points and Megan Johnson had 11 assists. Marissa Grubbs had 18 digs and Lynzie Grubbs added two blocks.

“Lynzie is getting her timing down,” Lemay said. “She’s going to be a valuable asset to us going forward. Anabel’s been swinging harder lately too.”

YOUNGSVILLE 3, OIL CITY 0
Coming off one of their toughest matche of the season at Cochranton Wednesday, it would’ve been easy for Youngsville to come home, lick its wounds and mail it in against visiting Oil City Thursday.
Instead, the Eagles put forth one of their best efforts of the year and swept the Oilers, 26-24, 25-20 and 25-19.
“The biggest piece of tonight is that I totally changed the rotation,” Youngsville coach Barb Lutton said. “We went from a 6-2 to a 5-1 and people stepped up where they needed to step up and did it in three games.”
Youngsville had to stay mentally tough to get the win. A night after losing sophomore Andrea Sveda to injury, the match was put on hold as one of the Oil City players was struck in the head during warmups and had to be taken from the court by ambulance. The match was also delayed for a time after one of the overhead lights broke when struck by a ball.
“It was impressive they were able to mentally hold it together,” Lutton said.
Jena Wilson was phenomenal from the service line, gaining 18 service points, with 11 aces. Amber Evans had 10 service points, with five aces, five kills and six digs. Megan Foley had eight service points, with four aces and three kills and Taylor Walters had five kills and 11 digs.
Alyssa Molek added 16 digs in the win.
“Molek had some great passes,” Lutton said. “She’s really proving her worth as a libiero.”
The Eagles hope to carry this momentum into the weekend when they participate in the Sheffield tournament.
“I’m very pleased with the win,” Lutton said. “We can positively go into the tournament.”
