Following Thursday’s match against Elk County Catholic, Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay said she knew if her team played that way against Brockway Monday, the Wolverines would send their seniors off with a win.

It looked bleak early, but Sheffield fought back and gave seniors Selena Foster and Callen Copely a victory in the final home game of their careers with a 3-2 (14-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20 and 15-12) win over the Rovers.

“The big difference and growth in this team is that the team that started the season would have laid down in game 3,” Lemay said. “This team didn’t quit.”

The student section was robust and raucous, thanks in large part to attendance by other athletes. The Wolverines (2-14) fed off that energy, almost to their own detriment at the start.

“In the first game, they were feeding off the intensity from the crowd and instead of concentrated, focused energy, it was everywhere energy,” Lemay said. “After the second game, we talked about how to feed off the crowd without it being a distraction. From that point they were just consistent. They were focused and consistent and they were very determined.”

Copely had 15 digs while Foster had six service points with three aces as the pair finished their careers with the Wolverines.

Emily Leichtenberger had four kills, 18 digs and two blocks, Anabel Sheldon had nine kills and 16 digs, Lynzie Grubbs added six kills and three blocks, Marissa Grubbs had eight service points and 15 digs and Megan Johnson added 16 assists.

“The football players were all there and they were so pumped for our girls,” Lemay said. “Our girls won for them . . . and they won for every team in Sheffield that would like to make a statement.”

In addition to closing the season with a win, the match marked the final night the Wolverines raised money for Alzheimer’s awareness. Sheffield has been raising funds throughout the month of October and for their efforts, the Wolverines with donate more than $1,000 to Alzheimer’s research and awareness.

Brockway won the junior varsity match 10-25, 25-18 and 15-13.

Tori Childress had six kills, Lily Lauffenberger had three kills and 15 assists and Sheldon had four kills and three aces.
