Warren County Christian School faced off with a talented Slippery Rock squad and fell in four sets, 11-25, 25-22, 14-25, 22-25.

It was a solid overall showing against a quality opponent.

“They’re probably the best team we’ve played,” said WCCS coach Mark Brenner. “The first set we really were out of it because of unforced errors. In the second set, our serving picked up and we really had some good, solid play, but we couldn’t gain much consistency.”

Leading the Lady Lions were McKenna Phelps 8 service points, 2 aces, 2 kills, 1 assist, 5 digs; Rachel Beatty 7 service points, 2 kills, 7 assists, 7 digs; Emma Marino 10 service points, 2 aces, 12 kills, 1 assist, 1 block, 5 digs; Krystal Kinney 2 service points, 2 digs; Gwen Reed 2 service points, 2 kills, 10 assists, 3 digs and Kiara Baker 2 service points, 6 kills, 1 block, 2 digs.

“The last set we were up 19-14 and then just had a calamity of errors that ended,” Brenner said. “I knew it would take a perfect scenario to beat them and we took a set from them and we really could have taken two.”

The JV team came out on top of a hard-fought match, 19-25, 25-21, 15-13.

Reed 5 service points, 3 aces, 2 kills, 14 assists; Kinney 6 service points, 3 kills, 1 dig; Baker 2 service points, 2 aces, 6 kills, Jael Brenner 6 service points, 1 ace; Emily Cox 7 service points, 1 ace, 1 kill, 1 dig and Gracia Clark 2 service points, 5 kills, 2 digs, 1 assist paced the Lady Lions.

“We were playing a completely different team – they had a much younger group for their JV,” noted Brenner. “I was really impressed with some of our younger players, Gracia and Jael.”

WCCS is right back at it today when they battle Meadville.
