Lady Knights earn hard-fought win over Port
The Eisenhower girls soccer team raced out to a 2-goal halftime lead and was able to hold off visiting Port Allegany, 3-2 on Thursday.
Caroline Smelko scored two goals for the Lady Knights, while Madison Mohney had the other.
“The field was a muddy mess from the rain overnight and in the morning” noted Eisenhower coach Diana Elmquist.
Smelko got the scoring started at the 29:01 mark of the first half off a feed from Lydia Giannini.
Smelko struck again less than four minutes later, as she took a feed from Mohney and put it in the back of the net.
Port Allegany was able to put some pressure on the Ike defense and get on the board at the 19:22 mark on a goal by Bree Garzel.
Eisenhower (4-5) struck again with 6:11 left in the first half, as Mohney scored on an assist from Aniela Gesing.
That goal proved to be critical, as Port Allegany’s Emma Fox made it a 1-goal game with 22:08 left in the second half, but EHS was able to hold on for the win.
Faith Johnson had another great game in net with 10 saves, while Port Allegany’s Cailey Bennett had nine.
