Youngsville stages rally to beat Sheffield

Youngsville volleyball players celebrate following their 3-2, comeback win against Sheffield at Youngsville High School, Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018. The Eagles went down 2-0 in the match before rattling off three straight wins for the victory over their cross-county rivals.

It was nearly deja vu for Sheffield volleyball Thursday night.

The Wolverines went up 2-0 on a county rival-Eisenhower-then dropped the next two games before winning in the fifth set.

This time, however, that county rival-Youngsville-proved too much as the Eagles defeated the visiting Wolverines, 3-2.

“Communication won those last three games,” Youngsville coach Barb Lutton said.

Mistakes cost the Wolverines.

Sheffield’s Emily Leichtenberger (22) attempts a kill while Youngsville’s Megan Foley (9) goes up for a block during their match at Youngsville High School, Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018. The Eagles defeated the Wolverines,

“We had 25 attack errors and 19 service errors,” Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay said. “You’re never going to win a game with that many errors. It’s just part of being young and inexperienced.”

The Eagles got the first point of the match, then the Wolverines responded with a 7-1 run to take control of the set. Sheffield ran away with the rest of the set and won 25-12.

The second set was more even at the start as the teams battled to an 8-8 tie. Sheffield then went on a 9-0 run to go up 17-8. The Eagles tried to battle back and got to within five at 22-17, but the Wolverines put the set away with a 25-19 win.

Youngsville jumped out to a 9-4 lead to start the third. Sheffield rally to tie at 12-12, then took its first lead of the set at 15-14. Trailing 19-18, the Eagles took a timeout. The pause seemed to shift momentum as Youngsville went on a 5-1 run coming out of the break.

“Momentum was on our side,” Lutton said.

Sheffield really began to feel the effect of service errors during the set as the mistakes prevented the Wolverines from making any prolonged runs.

“We can’t seem to get momentum back once it goes against us,” Lemay said.

The fourth set was the most evenly played set of the match. The teams traded points and played to an 18-18 tie. Sheffield went up 21-20, but the Eagles came back and finished the set with a 5-1 run to force a fifth.

The final set was all Eagles as they rolled to a 15-8 win.

Megan Foley had 17 service points, six kills and three blocks for the Eagles. Andrea Sveda had six kills, five blocks and 17 digs, while Taylor Walters had eight kills and eight digs, Kamryn Weissinger had 20 service points and three blocks and Amber Evans added 18 service points and seven digs in the win.

Marissa Grubbs had 12 service points and 21 digs for Sheffield. Megan Johnson had 18 assists, Emily Leichtenberger had nine kills and Callen Copley added 11 service points and 14 digs in the loss.
