Lady Knights blank Cambridge

Eisenhower’s Aniela Gesing (8) winds up for a shot during a match against Cambridge Springs at Cambridge Springs, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018. The Knights shut out the Blue Devils, 2-0.

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS, Pa. – Eisenhower’s girls soccer team bounced back from Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Mercer to notch a Region 3 shutout win at Cambridge Springs Tuesday.

Caroline Smelko had a goal and an assist and Faith Johnson recorded five saves in the 2-0 win.

At 29:00, Smelko took the ball and sent a crossing pass to the back post. Patricia Bortz was waiting for the pass and buried the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 Eisenhower (3-2 overall, 2-0 Region 3) lead.

Neither team was able to get anything past until Smelko scored with 13:53 left to play in the match.

Aleea Giese sent the ball on net, but the Blue Devils (2-4-1, 0-2-1) were called for a hand ball. Smelko buried the penalty kick for the insurance goal and Johnson made it hold up for the win.

The Knights were not without chances in the game as they forced the CS keeper to make 12 saves in the contest.

Eisenhower will face a big challenge Thursday when the Knights welcome region powerhouse Seneca. The Bobcats are coming off a 5-1 win over North East Monday.

Eisenhower currently sits in second place in the region standings
